Follow these steps to fix the problem with iOS 10.

    1. Connect your iPhone to your computer via iTunes.
    2. Wait about 30 seconds to allow iTunes reading your device.
    3. Click Update on your computer when prompted that, "There is a problem with the [device] that requires it to be updated or restored."
    4. Click Update again on your computer when prompted that, "If your [device] can't be updated, you will need to restore it to its factory settings."
    5. Click Restore if you see "Your iPad can't be updated..." (you won't necessarily have to restore).
    6. Click Restore and Update to confirm that you want to restore your device to its factory settings.

Or you can follow this instruction If you see an error when you update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support

First make sure you have the latest version of iTunes (12.5.1), if not then download from Apple and install or update. Plug in your iPad to the computer and open iTunes.  It should prompt you to re-install iOS. It takes a while but it should download the file and install ok.

I have had 2 devices do the same and with patience it worked through.  Without 12.5.1 it will try and reinstall iOS 9.3.5

MY device got into a recovery mode as well once the download for ios 10 was completed on itunes.

I had to unplug my device and plug it in again.. Make sure all the drivers are up to date. watch out for any alert message or error code populating on your itunes.

Itunes and computer has to be up to date. your cable has to be the original.

Although i made a backup,,, recovery mode was not something i wanted. It worked for me once i followed this step.

If you see error 9, 4005, 4013, or 4014 when you restore your iOS device - Apple Support

    1. Install the latest version of iTunes. (12.5.1.21)
    2. Restart your computer.
    3. Check for updates to your Mac or PC. If you restart your computer for an update, check for updates again after you restart.
    4. Force your device to restart.

However if all of these step fails.......

    1. Try to restore your device using another USB cable. (if all options fails)
    2. Try to restore your device on another computer.(if all options fails)
