Q: Mac running slowly for no reason

So I turned on my Mac this morning and everything is running extremely slowly, i end up getting the wheel of death every time I do a simple task. I have been into activity monitor and nothing excessI've. I've been into console and no repeating messages. I've cleared the PRAM and the SMC.

Any ideas,

Thanks

(cant upload any logs etc because the computer is so slow it won't let me do anything with out wasting hours of time)

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

    Try startup in Safe Mode.

    Hi dialabrain,

    from the page I linked

Some Macintosh computers that shipped with OS X Lion and later support the use of Apple Hardware Test over the Internet. These computers will start up to an Internet-based version of AHT if the hard drive does not contain AHT.  An Internet-enabled connection via Ethernet or Wi-Fi is required to use this feature. Internet-based AHT functions the same as AHT on the hard drive or flash storage outlined above.

If possible, run EtreCheck and post the results here.  Consider the possibility that your hard disk is failing.  I would back up files and then take it in for testing.

Like CT, if your Mac was running normally yesterday and you didn't install anything before you shutdown, I suspect your HD may be failing as well. You can also try running First Aid from Disk Utility.

First aid says there is no problems on the hard drive or the macintosh HD, something i forgot to mention is that around a month ago I performed a re-install of OSX and everything seemed fine

I would run EtreCheck as CT mentioned if possible and post the results here. It's certainly not normal for a Mac to be fine one day and run extremely slowly unless some incompatible software was installed or some part of the hardware is failing.
