Q: My password isn't being accepted

Hi everyone!

The library on my Macbook Pro needs repaired so that my apps will work correctly. The problem is, when it asks me to put in my password, it won't accept it. It's the same as the username and password I use to login to the computer. What can I do to fix it? I am also getting a Telephony error. I will login tomorrow morning to see what that is because i don't remember what it said exactly.

Is this the error you are encountering?

Some more context would be helpful. Explain the circumstances.

I get that error, but also a box pops up asking me to enter my password (user name is already there) because the library needs repaired. It will not accept the password, so I am at a loss on what to do.

First, ensure you have a reliable backup of your Mac, in case something should go wrong with continued troubleshooting. To learn how to do that please read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support.

Please try the following. Read everything first. If you can't follow along on your Mac, or if the instructions don't make any sense, then stop. Write back and describe where you get stuck.

Open  (Apple menu) > System Preferences > Users & Groups, and select your account. Click the "lock" icon, and authenticate using your login password.

Select your account, and control-click it so that the Advanced Options... submenu appears as in the following:

A window resembling the following will appear.

    ao.png

The important details in that window are your Account name and Home directory. As shown above mine are john and /Users/john respectively. Yours should be similarly named — whatever you chose for your account's "short name". In other words they might be melissa and /Users/melissa. If they are not, then click Cancel and stop here.

If they are, then click the Choose... button and confirm that your Home directory is the one chosen. Its name should be melissa or whatever you chose for your account's "short name".

    • If it is not, click Cancel and stop here.
    • If it is, click Open, then OK.

Restart your Mac and log in again.

As long as you followed the above instructions, you will not have made any changes to your User account, but it might fix the problem you have been experiencing.

    • If it doesn't, you're no worse off than you started, and I will need more information from you to determine what's going on. For example, I still need to know just what "library" is alleging the need for repair. That doesn't make any sense to me.
    • If serious problems arise — such as you cannot log in or your User account becomes somehow corrupted — then the Time Machine backup will be your only recourse to undo the above. That's the reason for creating a backup first.
