Q: Getting Started Question??

Hi, I purchased Final Cut Studio with FCP 5 some years back for personal video footage editing, upgraded the studio to get FCP7 when it came out and from memory it came with a good tutorial from Apple Pro Training called Blue Horizon Trailer. I remember doing this which took you through the edit in FCP, title in Motion, Sound edit in STP and finally creating the DVD in DSP.

I have not used FCP in a long time now and I am now beginning video from my drone and GoPro as well as a lot of tables with DV and HDV footage of my son from birth that I wish to finally get all the best clips together into a memories movie.

I just reinstalled Final Cut Studio as I kept reading FCPX would not import from my Sony HVR-A1E camera. I thought I would go through the Apple tutorial again as a refresher, I first notice that Motion is disabled so thought I would have to skip that part. Anyway after importing the first 4 tapes, I downloded the trail of FCPX and it imports both DV and HDV form my camera without any issues. So now I am seriously considering buying FCPX, before I do this I just have a few questions.

1. I noticed STP is no longer going, do I need to buy anything in addition to FCPX or will it do everything I need?

2. Do I need to buy Motion or does FCPX do titles well? Although I have a video intro in After Effects that I would like to import in, but as its rendered as a .MOV I should be able to just include that in the FCPX timeline?

3. Do I need to buy Compressor for the odd movie? Most will just be targeting YouTube, Vimoe, FB, iPad. Only the video of my Son may end up on DVD.

4. What do you use today in place of DVD Studio Pro as that is not in the Mac App Store?

Sorry that was long winded... Just wanted to make you aware of my needs to get the right answers I hope.

Many thanks

Nick

FCP-7 was abandoned by Apple many years ago, the newer operating systems Apple makes are made without regard as to supporting FCS apps. Some have fallen by the wayside. Others do operate, but with limited or sketchy functionality.

    2. Do I need to buy Motion or does FCPX do titles well?

You'll need/want motion to do advanced compositing or title creation. FCP-X will suffice for everything else.

    3. Do I need to buy Compressor for the odd movie? Most will just be targeting YouTube, Vimoe, FB, iPad. Only the video of my Son may end up on DVD.

FCP-X contains presets to transcode material to most common delivery formats. You'll want Compressor if you need to bulk convert source material or have a greater range of transcode options.

    4. What do you use today in place of DVD Studio Pro as that is not in the Mac App Store?

FCP-X will burn a simple DVD, compatible with set top DVD players. If you want to create a DVD with elaborate menus, etc. you'll need to either get DVD Studio Pro working (on an older computer) or look at Adobe Encore (difficult, but not impossible to get with your Adobe Creative Cloud subscription) or for simpler DVDs, Roxio's Toast.

FCP-X uses an entirely new editing paradigm, so in some respects you are at an advantage to switch to it now and learn it from scratch as opposed to trying to apply extensive knowledge of FCP-7 to a program that works completely differently.

Thank you very much for all the info, now I'll go get FCPX as it seems it will do everything I need with the exception of maybe Motion but that's not expensive.
