Q: Upgrade MacBookPro 10.6.8 and Ipad 7.1.1

Hello everyone.

Here's the situation.

I have a mid-2011 Macbook pro, with an old operating system on it. 10.6.8 to be exact.

I also have an Ipad, software version 7.1.1 - Model MD786C/A

I never did the updates because I use these products for professional audio applications and also DJ, and at the time I got them I was so busy with projects that I couldn't just afford to have compatibility issues and whatnot.

So, a few years later, i'm starting to have issues with my software (Traktor Pro, Ableton Live, among others). And to update those, I need to update the OS on my devices.

I want to update both operating systems.

How should I proceed in order to avoid problems?

We're talking about some serious leaps in OS versions, so what do you advise? I'm also considering installing an SSD drive on my MacBook.

Should I take them to an Apple Store and let them do the work?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dan

    Hi  ...

See if your Mac can run the latest OS X available El Capitan > Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support

You can check to see which iOS your iPad can update to here >  Identify your iPad model - Apple Support

The problems you may run into updating from Snow Leopard v10.6.8 is currently installed third party software that's not compatible with El Capitan.

Backup your Mac prior to upgrading as well as your iOS devices.

If you want, make an appointment at an Apple Genius Bar.

Apple can upgrade your Mac and devices for you.

    Well said.

Let me add my 2 cents on performance:
I can say from experience that a mid 2011 MBP 13'' will run fine with El Capitan, even though it will not be quite as snappy as Snow Leopard (10.6.8). I recommend upgrading the RAM to at least 8GB, if not already done.

The iPad (I gather it is an iPad Air?) should take iOS 9 or iOS 10 just fine performance-wise.
