Sep 14, 2016 9:28 AM in response to Ace192by Grant Bennet-Alder,... and you connected it with a known-good Ethernet cable? It should get an IP address in the range of 192.168.2.xxx.
what exactly is its status in system preferences > Network > Ethernet ??
what result do you get for (assist me ) > (Diagnostics)
The system preferences panel for the Ethernet on the "host device" (your MacBook in this case) always shows a "self-assigned" IP address, and this is perfectly normal.

Sep 14, 2016 10:09 AM in response to Ace192by Grant Bennet-Alder,As I said above, the settings shown for the Mac side of the shared Ethernet connection will always be self-assigned IP address. They have no connection to reality once you turn on Internet Sharing.
Can you, or can you not ping that address?
