Sep 14, 2016 8:26 AM in response to madatapple18by VodkaPundit,I'm chatting with Support right now, and it turns out Apple has ON PURPOSE killed Smart Playlists in iOS 10.
Smart Playlists (at least nested ones) haven't been able to update themselves without syncing to iTunes since iOS 4, but now they won't even play in iOS 10.
So... my iPhone is ******* useless to me as a music player, which is just awesome after I bought a 128GB model specifically so it could carry all of my music.
Apple says they love music, but they seem to hate people who love music.

Sep 14, 2016 9:37 AM in response to madatapple18by marchildy,Looks like there isn't any reason for me to stay within the Applesphere anymore. I'm one of those people left behind by Apple's blind ambition to compete in the streaming market. I'm about to buy a new laptop a couple new phones and tablets too... Looks like a long day of googling iTunes alternatives.

Sep 14, 2016 9:59 AM in response to madatapple18by Happy Dad,I have smart playlists still on my phone that work. However, with iOS9 I gave up with using iCloud Music Library as it was messing up my ratings and I use wifi sync to keep my phone synced with the computer. I am continuing this with iOS10.
Are you saying that if you use iCloud Library, smart playlists simply do not work anymore?

Sep 14, 2016 10:02 AM in response to Happy Dadby marchildy,My playlists appear, but don't have any content. I'm on the phone with support currently, however I'm pretty sure I'll need to sync with iTunes to fix it.

Sep 15, 2016 6:29 AM in response to marchildyby cdeupree,Even syncing with iTunes doesn't fix the problem. I have 13 smart playlists that I carry on my phone, and only 3 of them have content. This update is a huge step backwards.

Sep 15, 2016 10:17 AM in response to cdeupreeby marchildy,Brutal, is there any way to step back to iOS 9?

Sep 15, 2016 11:43 AM in response to marchildyby cdeupree,I've just completed a restore operation by putting my iPhone into Recovery Mode as described at http://www.imore.com/how-to-downgrade-ios10-your-iphone-or-ipad. The complete operation as described on that page was my attempt to step back to iOS 9. The step back did not work, but after the recovery (and subsequent factory installation of iOS 10), I restored from a backup. Now all songs in all of my smart playlists are present. I have not tested to see whether they are still as smart as they were, or if the playlist content remains after using them for a few days, but at least the playlists appear to be intact.

Sep 18, 2016 10:56 PM in response to madatapple18by dirkfrb,I have this problem too with some of my smart playlists. Some are empty or almost empty on my phone, some are not.
The problem seems based in comments as filter criteria. Take "contains blabla as comment" out of a smart playlist and it reappears correctly on the iPhone.

Actually, just editing the smart playlist for any reason is enough to fix the issue. Editing the playlist causes it to be re-read, and then it should populate.
But you don't need to do this, just remove and re-add the playlist to your device, that should be enough to cause it to re-populate ... I just fixed dozens of empty smart playlists by un-syncing/re-syncing them.

Sep 25, 2016 8:15 PM in response to VodkaPunditby hairydog40,Apple has really messed up now. No good reason to pull things like our playlists. All of mine that are from cd's I BOUGHT!! Now gone!! Idiots, hope the company fails now.

Sep 26, 2016 3:48 AM in response to madatapple18by rosygale,I found, if I created a new smart playlist with 1 rule i.e. "playlist is <name of non syncing playlist>" and called it whatever, e.g. just add "for device" to the original name to avoid confusion, the new duplicate playlist would sync. The original remains blank.
