Q: Backup issues after updating to iOS10

Dear Apple users,

I have updated my iphone 6 plus yesterday with iOS 10. Phone is working absolutely fine. But I am having issues in backing up my phone. I generally back up my phone with my Macbook iTunes (Via cable and sometime over wifi). But after updating to iOS 10 it seems I cannot back up my phone anymore. I do not know the real cause of this problem.

1. I am not able to back up my iPhone data over wifi in iTunes. ( Previously this was not the case).

2. I tried backing up my phone by using cable too. I also pressed "Trust" this computer but I am getting this error message. Please see below.

I also authorized my computer by logging out from iTunes and logging back it. And yet I am having same issues.

"iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because an invalid response was received from the device."

Does anyone know what is this invalid response could be?

Do I have to change any settings in my phone or iTunes?

Help Please!!!

Many thanks,

Deven

Did you upgrade iTunes to the latest version? iOS 10 requires iTunes 12.5.1.

    Hi ShagCA,

I have updated version of iTunes. Which is 12.2.2.

I also clicked on the link which you provided and downloaded the latest version which also giving me 12.2.2 only. How should I download 12.5.1?

Does it have to do with Macbook iOS? I have old Macbook which runs on 10.7.5

I Did not upgrade to iTunes 12.5.1 and I was able to backup and sync my iPhone 5s and my iPad Air 2 this morning, Both devices are running iOS 10. Maybe I just got lucky, but I backed up and synced both devices twice just to be sure.

DId you try updating to the latest versions of iTunes? Did you try quitting iTunes, reboot the Mac and restart your devices?

I Should add that it took a very, very long time to backup both devices and I attribute that to the new iOS and all of the app updates that I did yesterday before upgrading the devices.

EDIT - Your Mac OS is too old to sync. You need to be running OS X10.9 now.

I'm not a Macbook user but I am positive your OSX (or MacOS... whatever it is called) can not run iTunes 12.5. You'll have to upgrade Macbook operating systems.

You can try shutting down the computer and restarting it. If you still cannot get the device to back up on iTunes, hold down option and click the mac logo on the top left. This helps to check if the USB cable is reading the iPhone. If you see it there try restarting iTunes then it should work. I had to do the same thing yesterday because my phone was bricked. Hope this helps.

    Hi Demo,

Thank for your reply. I tried everything what you have suggested but still no luck. I have iTunes version 12.2.2 and as you said my laptop is old I cannot get 12.5.1 on my laptop.

I am surprised that before iOS 10 my laptop was able to back up my phone and now it is not.

Thank for your help. I may upgrade my laptop or go back to windows.

    Hi Powell18,

I have tried what you have suggested but it is not working. From others reply I gathered that iOS 10 requires iTunes 12.5.1.

    Thanks for your help.

My daughter has been running iOS 9.3.5 on her iPhone which technically required OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion In order to sync with iTunes. She is actually running Lion 10.7.5 and it is not supposed to wor that way. The reason that she was able to do this was because she never updates her phone using iTunes. She always updated OTA using Software Update on the phone itself.

I Sincerely doubt that this will work for her now if she updates to iOS 10. We will most likely have to update her Mac OS or she won't be able to sync.

I have the same no sync issue on my 2006 MBP17". So you are saying, even though my MBP works fine for my needs, I have to go buy a new Mac?

What I am saying is that Apple states that iOS 10 requires Mac OS X 10.9 for syncing an iOS device with iTunes 12.5.1. I'm not telling you that you have to do anything.

    Hi Demo,

You are right, I was also able to sync my iOS 9.3.5. via Macbook OS 10.7.5 with iTunes 12.2.2 via cable and over the wifi. But since this new iOS 10 update came out on 13th September I am not able to sync. Either I will have to update my Macbook or move to another phone. Second option is unlikely. :-)

    Hi Rick,

It is up to you if you want to buy a new Macbook or not. So far it seems I can not update my iTunes from 12.2.2 to 12.5.1on my Mountain Lion 10.7.5 and therefore I am not able to sync my iTunes.
