Q: Can't restore from iCloud backup iOS 10

Hi, I updated my iPhone 6S yesterday to iOS 10 by doing a fresh install (restore with IPSW using iTunes) so then I could restore from my last iCloud backup (I don't backup with iTunes).

After the update, while finishing the initial setup of the phone, I select "Restore from iCloud backup" then I select the backup I want to restore but when the backup finishes downloading I get a message "Cannot restore backup". I've tried several times and also with previous backups of the same phone as well with the same result.

Is this a bug with iCloud? Is there any other way I can restore my apps to my iPhone from that backup?

Did you update iTunes prior to installing iOS 10?  iTunes required an update prior to installing the new iOS.

Yes I did, I updated iTunes before installing iOS 10.

I've also read all the official support pages regarding iCloud backup & iOS 10 updating but none of them specify what to do in case of this error when restoring from a backup.

Yes, I have restarted the device several times and I've also restored it again to iOS 10 and I'm still getting the same error.

I've read that too, I can't seem to find anything in Apple Support regarding this issue.

Next step would be to reach out to Apple Support (link at bottom of the page).

I have the same problem - I can't restore my iCloud Backup and keep getting "Restore from iCloud backup" (iPhone 6S). Please let know if you find any solution...

I had this same issue with my iPhone 6s Plus.  Attempted a restore from iCloud backup and kept getting "Cannot restore backup."  I attempted it on more than one wifi network (work and home).  I even set my phone right next to the wifi router at home to ensure it was getting optimal signal... still no success.  Finally contacted Apple support who had me put the phone in recovery mode, launch iTunes and completely reinstall iOS 10 and then attempt restore... still did not work.  Per their instructions, I contacted Apple back again (also spoke again to a senior advisor).  She said that this was a known issue that Apple was working on fixing.

To make a long story short, I had to set up my phone as new and go through all that pain to get things back online again.  Fortunately, I was able to recover fairly well after nearly a two-day stretch including the time it took with Apple support, which resulted in nothing.  I give iOS 10 a D-.  Also have noted other anomalies with this "buggy" iOS.  Apple has their work cut out for them.

    Same issue here.

It seems this is a ios 10 bug.

Also the funny thing is that a while ago I change my apple id email. So now when I restore from backup it asks for my apple id and pw and after i select the backup it asks again for my old email/apple id and pw to restore purchases. So how am I supposed to insert the password for an unexistent email/apple id?

I'm having the same issue - received a replacement 6s from Apple (instore) today, got home to restore it and having the "cannot restore" message. I've been back and forth with online chat support for the last couple hours to no avail. Really frustrated, having to set up as a new iPhone in the interim isn't ideal!

I'm wondering how long Apple are going to take to resolve this...

I have the same issue. I backed up my iPhone 6s and tried to restore the data on my iPhone 7. And it kept showing can not restore. I think it is a bug related to IOS 10.

Just to update - I've spoken with a senior advisor who says that it is an iOS10 issue, and he's going to let me know when he's got a fix ETC from the engineering team. Fingers crossed its soon!

Sorry I didn't post here sooner. As a lot of people here have also done, I spoke with Apple Support several times and they told me the same thing a week ago: It's an iOS 10 bug and they are going to fix it "soon".

What I ended up doing was downgrading back to iOS 9.3.5, restoring the iCloud backup (worked great) and then backed up my phone using iTunes. After that I just updated to iOS 10 again and restored from the iTunes backup, which worked without any issues.

What I've learned from this is to either don't use iCloud backups, or to always have a local iTunes backup as well.
