Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding since updating to iOS 10 you've been unable to use the keyboard when in Split View on your iPad Air 2. I know being unable to use the keyboard can surely impact everyday use. I am happy to help.
First I recommend restarting your iPad. This can resolve many unexpected behaviors. Please follow the steps below if needed.- Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
- Drag the slider to turn your device completely off.
- After the device turns off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again until you see the Apple logo.
Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If the issue persists, another option would be to Reset All Settings. This takes all settings back to default, including Wi-Fi networks and passwords, alerts, notifications, brightness, wallpaper, sounds etc. Even though no content is lost with this step it's always a good idea to back up first. If you don't have a backup you can use the following link to assist with backing up.
How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Once you've successfully backed up, Reset All Settings in Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.
Have an amazing day!
