Q: Running out of application memory

This is bizarre. I just upgraded to El Capitan last week and since then this has happened, I'd say three times. Suddenly a Force Quit window will pop up telling me I've run out of application memory and that I should quit the apps that are listed as "not responding." If I try switching to those apps I can't. They've essentially frozen and I MUST quit them. I'm not the kind of person who has a dozen apps running at once. I normally only have 6 or 7 at most.

I've seen some other threads on this elsewhere that were of no help. Most concrete thing I read was "not enough RAM" or "System disk is full." Well I have 32 GB RAM so I doubt that's an issue. And my 500 GB system SSD has 104 GB available so I don't think that would be it. It IS weird though because the drive index, added up, would indicate I have 50 GB more open space than what I'm told by Get Info. I know some space is taken up by invisible system requirements but not 50 GB!

I've just looked at "About This Mac..." and THAT says I have 145 GB free. WTH?

Anyway, this app memory thing has NEVER happened to me. It's just since the El Capitan upgrade. Is there some bug with ElCap I'm not aware of?

Download and run Etrecheck.  Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here (and recommended by Apple Support personnel) in the ASC to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Okay I've uninstalled Sophos and Symantec and Drive Genius. But Spotify? Really? But my music!

John Galt: I have my own back up strategy, thank you. I've given up on Time Machine. It's never worked properly for me.

John Galt: I have my own back up strategy, thank you. I've given up on Time Machine. It's never worked properly for me.

Drive "Genius" should also be uninstalled, since it has been implicated in directly causing corruption and data loss. It's not causing the "application memory" problem though. Nor, for that matter, is "Spotify".

Perhaps "Drive Genius" is the reason Time Machine didn't work properly for you in the past, since TM has been 100% reliable on all my Macs since its inception.

As I mentioned above, I did remove DriveGenius.

Drive Genius hasn't been on my system terribly long; certainly not as long as my checkered history with TM. In fact it's altogether likely I didn't even have DG by the time I quit trying to work with TM. Time and again I tried to work with it and it would fill the intended drive and then stop working telling me the drive was full and backup failed instead of deleting older files and space dictated. Isn't that the point of it? To work seamlessly in the background? Deleting the oldest data in favor of the newest?

So where do you see that DG is causing data corruption and that Spotify is not the cause of the application memory prob? I don't even see them mentioned in that report.

FWIW, Spotify isn't a problem. You might want to make sure it doesn't start at login however. It starts fast enough that shouldn't be a problem when you want to listen to it.

I discussed certain products that are likely to cause the problem you originally explained. The reason I added "Drive Genius" is due to your additional comment regarding Time Machine.

Add "Disk Warrior" and "Monolingual" to that growing list.

That Mac's operating system has been altered to the point that it is unreasonable to expect proper operation from it.

So I was writing a lengthy reply regarding the "growing list" of garbage in my system and my unreasonableness at expecting proper operation out of my OS when it is so cluttered with said garbage, when--OOPS!--up comes the window telling me I ran out of application memory! Safari froze and I was force to quit it. This after following all your directions on what to remove from the system. I had even done a second sweep and found two small Drive Genius items and trashed them, but still it happened again. In fact, after I forced quit Safari I wanted to go to my MacMail to find one of the emails I'd received from this thread and--OOPS!--that had frozen too along with Dashlane.

So I restarted the iMac and ran EtreCheck again. The results are below. But before that, let me stress again, all this happened only after upgrading to El Capitan. My system was identically "altered" to the point of unreasonableness with Yosemite and I never had any problems. I wasn't even familiar with the concept of running out of application memory until this started happening.

    With that, I give you:

    Drive "Genius" remains installed.

I suspect you really are not interested in fixing your Mac.

Wow...John Galt...dude, what is your issue? Look, you want to offer assistance, great. If you want to lecture someone, go elsewhere please. How did you get all those "points" being such an insufferable pedant? Please don't reply to my questions anymore. You are of no help. Thank you.

ANYWAY...after three separate sweeps with two different system searchers--because I really don't want to fix my Mac--I found a couple more obscure DriveGenius files. I deleted THOSE and ran EtreCheck with these results:
