Q: Kernel Panic during sleep and various panics/restarts

Hi everyone,

I've got a late 2013 27in. iMac with an nVidia card and maxed out 32 gb of RAM running El Capitan, and I've been having some kernel panic/restart issues lately. This hasn't happened to me in quite sometime, but this latest kernel panic occurred while the machine was asleep. I had to restart it manually because it would not wake from sleep, and produced this report upon restart:

Additionally, I've been having lots of issues with the machine crashing and restarting while using graphically intensive plugins or effects in Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere. I do plan to contact Adobe about these issues, but I'm wondering if anyone can see a correlation in the above report with some potential graphics card issues. I'm concerned that my GPU is having problems or if my graphics card will need to be replaced.

Thanks!

You have created a mess of your system by installing Antivirus software, please contact AVG and uninstall their app per their directions. Antivirus, cleaning and other third party maintenance apps are totally unnecessary and tend to create more problems than they fix. OS X is extremely secure and if simply kept up-to-date will run well for years.

Next, ensure the following applications that use:

    com.nvidia.CUDA    1.1.0

    com.AmbrosiaSW.AudioSupport    4.1.4

    com.valvesoftware.SteamInput    3083.39.62

    com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower    1.6.7

are up-to-date. If they are the KP's persist uninstall each one-by-by until the KP's cease.

Could be any one or the combination of third party stuff that you have put into and have connected to your iMac.

First thing that I would do is test it with only the Stock RAM modules installed, no Anti-virus software, no SteamInput and no USB PlayStation Controller.

    rkaufmann87,

Thank you for all the helpful information. I had no idea that AVG or antivirus software could be causing these issues on a Mac. I will contact AVG and uninstall the software properly per your suggestion.

Regarding the other KP's that you mentioned, my nVidia CUDA support is up to date. This is something that has been a concern as of late, as I mentioned that Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere have been crashing my entire computer (not just the software crashing, but forcing the computer to restart itself entirely) much more frequently than they ever were in the past. I'm worried that there is something wrong with my nvidia card.

I'm not even sure what the AmbrosiaSW.AudioSupport is, I've never even heard of it. I will see if I can track it down in my system. Do you have any idea what that might be or how to find it?

I'm not sure about the SteamInput exactly. Steam is an online gaming platform, and based on den.thed's response, this could be an issue through the usage of third party game controllers I am using to play games on Steam (I have a Playstation 3 controller and Xbox 360 controller both via USB, but I typically leave the Playstation 3 controller plugged in most of the time). Steam has major issues with updates on Mac and they have never rectified this issue. Every now and then the software will ask me to install the exact same update every time I start it up, multiple times in a row, until the next update is made available.

Soundflower is something I never really use so I can get rid of that. I've heard that it can potentially cause issues but never seemed to think it was related.

    Hi den.thed,

Thank you for your helpful input. It seems that you and rkaufmann87 have similar thoughts. As I mentioned to him, do you have any idea what the SteamInput could be? Is this third party USB controllers which I am using to play games with on Steam, or something else? I don't recall installing any third party software related to Steam other than software which allows my Mac to detect an Xbox 360 controller via USB.

For the Playstation 3 controller, should I simply leave it unplugged, or is there some other software which I need to uninstall related to that?

I suspect if you uninstall the SoundFlower software per the developers instructions that may also get rid of Ambrosia.  Remember once you uninstall something empty the Trash and restart the computer before retesting.

As for the Steam software, Steam is a third party gaming platform. You may need to uninstall any third party gaming controllers.

I can only identify where the KP begins and what software may be causing it. What each app is I cannot tell you.

Remove the two aftermarket memory modules, and determine if the KPs subside.

As awful as "AVG" is it did not cause that kernel panic. It should still be uninstalled. That may be challenging because its uninstallation instructions do not work.

I don't know exactly, because I do not use those controllers or do that type of gaming on my Mac's.

It most likely came as part of a game package or was recommend to you by a game or another gamer.

    Hi John,

Thanks for your input. I am concerned though about removing my aftermarket memory modules, as I do rely on that additional memory for the intensive graphics work that I do. I will however run some tests in Adobe After Effects and Premiere, with and without the memory modules, to see if the same crashes do occur.

    rkaufmann87,

I believe the Playstation 3 controller was immediately recognized when I first plugged it into a USB port. I did install 3rd party software for the Xbox360 controller however. I will uninstall that software, and keep the Playstation 3 controller unplugged while not using it and see if that makes any difference. Thanks.

The idea is not to permanently deprive your Mac of the 32 GB required for your work, but to isolate the cause of the KP. If they do not occur with only the two factory originals installed, Crucial will replace theirs under their lifetime warranty.

    John,

That's a good point. I will test out the memory modules as you have proposed. I'm not sure if the additional modules I purchased are from Crucial, but either way they were made by a top manufacturer of memory modules.

You must specifically request Mac-compatible RAM, even from Crucial. If you don't do that the vendor will often supply generic PC memory that does not meet its own published specifications.

PCs cope with that by adjusting its memory bus speed downward, leaving the user none the wiser for having paid for memory that is actually operating slower than advertised.

On a Mac, the memory must absolutely meet those requirements. Otherwise KPs will occur, generally randomly, and sometimes long after you installed it. Other than Crucial I know of only one other aftermarket vendor that sells RAM guaranteed to meet Apple's stringent specifications, OWC / MacSales.

You might consider running Apple Hardware Test but it might not find anything wrong. If it identifies a RAM failure though, it's conclusive.

    John,

The memory is definitely Mac compatible. I purchased it off of NewEgg some time ago. Now that I think about it though, I was running the computer with 24GB of RAM (16GB of original memory + an additional 8GB module) for quite some time and very few KP issues. I then installed an additional 8GB of the exact same third party memory to max the system out at 32GB. I've had it maxed out since probably the beginning of the year, and only within the past few weeks have I been experiencing these issues more frequently. I did have the occasional KP while the 24GB of memory was installed, but they were very infrequent, much more infrequent than they have been lately.

So does this sound like it could still be an issue with the memory modules?

It is not possible to definitively test memory for specification compliance when it's installed on the same Mac conducting the test. That's the reason for recommending leaving only the iMac's originally installed RAM, and using it long enough to conclude whether the KPs subside, or not.

Factory-installed RAM failures can occur, but those instances are extremely rare (as in almost unheard of) compared to aftermarket RAM. The few failures I know of occurred immediately upon installing OS X upgrades.

I would not trust NewEgg or any other PC-centric vendor to supply Apple RAM. I purchased RAM from them in the past and it was not reliable on a Mac. I returned it and replaced it with either Crucial or OWC branded RAM.

    ... very few KP issues.

Kernel panics should never occur, and you should not tolerate a single one.
