Q: El Capitan boots up frozen (beach ball)

Streaming a video on safari caused my macbook to freeze completely and ever since I have not been able to boot it back up without it immediately freezing as soon as the desktop loads up. I've tried safe boot, holding shift, quickly trying to get into force quit to close safari. What are my options here other than a clean install and losing my data? I've shut it down (only holding the power button down works) and restarted probably 10-15 times over the last week in hopes that it just fixes itself but it seems like I'm going to need to find the solution myself.

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9)
