Q: USB formatted on windows computer and then loaded with files from IOS El Capitan does not work correctly on Windows computer

I have been trying to format a usb drive on my home iMac for use on a Windows computer. I tried formatting it on the iMac using El Capitan and formatting it on the Windows computer but with the same issue.  The files are corrupted and don't work properly on the Windows computer at work.  The files are a combination of audio and writing files.  Is there a  way to overcome this issue.  When I used previous versions of IOS there weren't any use problems.

iOS is for iPhones and iPads, but you also state El Capitan, so I'll assume that is what you are talking about.

There are lots of audio formats and lots of writing programs, so it's kind of difficult to determine if it is a file format issue or a disk format issue.

Even the if it is an mp3, wmv, or any other file extension, there is more to the "format" of an audio file than the extension.

Those designations are just wrappers that hold the audio information. The audio information can be encoded in a variety of different formats and still be an mp3 or wmv. An mp3 that plays on Windows may not play on a Mac due to using a codec that is not installed on the Mac. Apple recently purged the OS of older, obsolete codecs. Generally, VideoLan's VLC can play most audio and video files on both Mac and Windows.

What type of writing files were they? Word, Pages, TextEdit, … ?

Thanks for your reply. The materials are provided by publishers.  They work on both iMac and Windows computers. When I copy them to the usb they work fine on iMac. But they don't work on Windows.  In previous versions of OS X they worked fine on both.

What file system format are you trying?

ExFAT is likely the best choice for using on both Mac and Windows.

You should also use a Master Boot Record (MBR) partitioning table.
