Q: How do I delete "Documents and Data" in podcast on my Iphone 5?  I know how to delete individual podcast and podcast episodes, but won't allow me to delete the "Docs and Data". I have limited space on my phone and it's taking up an increasing amount.

Had the same problem. In the first 3 months of a new iPhone 6s Plus the phantom podcast storage went up to 3.8GB. That’s more than 1GB lost storage —per month! The only remedy was a restore and not touching the Podcast app again. (I’m using Downcast since then, after a short affair with Overcast.)

Has anybody tested if the bug is still there with iOS 9.3.1?

I'm on iOS 9.3.4 and yes, still present. 4GB of wasted space here.

I swear it's anoter part of the Apple conspiracy to force you to upgrade your phone often. Complete ********. Why aren't you listening Apple??!

Question, anyone know if this backup and restore process messes up anything related to using your phone for 2 step authentication. i.e. if using the Authy or Google Authenticator, or Blizzard Authenticator apps?

Good news for everyone that has been dealing with this issue - iOS 10 has a new feature that help resolve the Podcasts storage problem.

One thing you can now do in iOS 10 is 'delete' stock apps from your device. It doesn't really delete the app, but it deletes the icon link from the apps and it also *removes associated data and configuration files!*  This means that deleting the Podcasts app will also delete the huge data file.

Once removed, the Podcasts app can just be readded from the App Store, and the settings are instantly restored from your iCloud account.

I tested this out and regained over 1GB of lost space.
