Why not? If you are wanting to share the internet, then you need to turn on Hotspot. As the Personal Hotspot is what shares out the internet. Its quite logical.

Nov 29, 2013 10:40 AM in response to Craig Bradyby LesD2013,I was able to use Airdrop to share pictures and videos. Not sure whether it works on Wifi or Bluetooth. My iPhone and iPad do not recognize each other. It was funny that I could pair my Samsung phone with my iPhone but all the iPhone does is indicate it is not connected.

Airdop uses BT to locate other Airdrop capable devices and WiFi for the transfer.

Dec 15, 2013 5:04 PM in response to Babaikramby tramarn,Some have said you don't need bluetooth to share some data, photos etc, however some apps require syncing via bluetooth. Turning on hotspot on both my ipad and iphone did the trick. Thanks!

Sep 14, 2016 6:47 PM in response to CapturedMomentsby sbensonnz,This answer helped me, even though my iPad could 'see' my iPhone, it wouldn't pair, I was getting really frustrated until I realised pairing wont complete unless you have Personal Hotspot turned on in the settings of your iPhone. THEN it will pair. Think I'll go lie down now.
