Q: Auto-Brightness Not Available in iOS 10

My iPhone 5S somehow had lost the Auto-Brightness ability about one week ago, when I noticed the screen was very dark when in direct sunlight. I looked to see if the Auto-Brightness option was not selected in Settings > Display & Brightness, but it wasn't even listed underneath the Brightness slider.

I decided to wait until iOS 10 was released, because I thought that the new update would solve the issue. Unfortunately, the issue is still exactly the same as before with iOS 10 installed. I do see that this question was asked previously (dont have auto brightness anymore on ios 9.3.4), but I did not want to derail that discussion with a different iOS build. I have already restarted my phone, but no change has occurred. I hope I don't have to backup & restore my phone, especially since that did not resolve the previous inquiry either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi chules!

I see that your iPhone is currently missing the option to enable Auto-Brightness in the Settings app.  I know this is an important feature, so I'm happy to offer some help.  Before proceeding with troubleshooting, you will want to back up the iPhone.  Here are instructions on backing up:

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Next, we can try resetting the settings on the iPhone.  This does not remove any data like Apps, Photos or contacts, but it removes your preferences for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb, Notifications, General, Sounds, Touch ID, Brightness & Wallpaper and Privacy, so those will need to be set up again.  You can initiate this reset by going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

    Cheers!

I finally have some time to try to solve this issue today, but after backing up my data and choosing "Reset All Settings", auto-brightness control is still not available.

Will I have to do a full restore on at this point? (I've upgraded to iOS 10.0.2 at this point.)

Yes, at this point it would be best to restore to factory settings. When you restore, you'll want to set the iPhone up as a new device to test it out first. After you test it, you can restore your backup and test again. Please back up again as well if you'd like to preserve any data you've saved since the last backup.

Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings

Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup

    Cheers!
