Sep 14, 2016 7:49 PM in response to 123CliffWby babowa,Is this your older Mac showing in your profile? Or a brand new one?
Appointments at your nearest Genius Bar are a great way to troubleshoot such issues - I'd suggest making an appointment; the diagnosis is free. If it is a new Mac, take advantage of your warranty and contact Apple support.

Sep 14, 2016 8:43 PM in response to babowaby 123CliffW,This is a 2009 27" that belongs to a friend. I am trying to help him but he can't remember what OS is installed.

Sep 14, 2016 8:44 PM in response to TheExpolsiveCowby 123CliffW,How do you start in recovery mode? I have tried safe boot. Same thing happen - shuts down part way through start up.

Sep 14, 2016 9:23 PM in response to 123CliffWby 123CliffW,I found out that Mavericks is installed. When I try to reinstall from Safari, it says the HDD is locked and it can't install.

Sep 14, 2016 9:26 PM in response to 123CliffWby babowa,Does the friend still have the original install media? You could try booting up with that; a 2009 is too old to have the firmware updated to allow recovery mode I believe. However, no harm in trying: hold Command + Option + R keys. See if it'll boot up - if it does, use the Disk Utility there to check/repair the hard drive.

Sep 14, 2016 9:29 PM in response to 123CliffWby babowa, sorry about the double post - another forum glitch.
What exactly do you mean with "reinstall from Safari"?

Sep 14, 2016 9:47 PM in response to babowaby 123CliffW,I started in recovery and the window gave 4 options. I only used Command - R to start in recovery. He didn't give me a boot disk but he is looking at home to see if he has one. Mavericks didn't come on a disk though. Sorry about the confusion with Safari.

Sep 14, 2016 9:56 PM in response to 123CliffWby babowa,I know Mavericks didn't come with a disk, but that model originally came with a DVD (it would have most likely been some version of 10.6.x). It was updated to Mavericks.
Command + R is "local" recovery mode, whereas Command + Option + R connects you to Apple's servers.

Are you referring to the Utilities window? If so, try to repair the hard drive. And, when done with that, reinstall the OS.

Sep 14, 2016 10:38 PM in response to babowaby 123CliffW,I ran disk repair but it failed - cannot be repaired, then it disappeared. I think it may be toast.
When I tried to boot with Command-option-R it shut down.
