Q: apple mail:  while composing want to stop auto-save

In Apple Mail, when I take longer than a few moments to compose an email, the program starts auto-saving interim copies of that email, often just a few words at a time.  It is really tedious to delete all these auto-saved interim messages.  How can I stop this behavior?

I'm up to date on El Capitan updates.

Thank you, anyone.

Don't they delete when you send the e-mail?

No, they are persistent, and I have had to delete them manually.

    Except --

I just tested that ... and the auto-saved versions disappeared about five minutes after I sent the email.  That is an extraordinarily long time to wait, don't you think?  My computer is a 2011 MacBook Pro, usually pretty quick.

So, I guess, problem solved, but not satisfactorily.  I didn't notice this situation at all until after the most recent El Capitan update.

I think I remember when auto-save came around that there was some way to just turn it off.  Do you happen to know how one could do that?
