Q: IOS 10 mail puts messages threads in seemingly random order

Since the IOS 10 Update email message threads on my iPhone 6+ are in a really weird order. There seems to be no real order to how the messages are displayed once you click on the thread.

The first message in the thread seems to be randomly placed under some of the replies, and occasionally the entire thread will be under one of the replies as if the message breaks were not detected.

I have Enabled the "Most Recent Messages on Top" setting which has meant the last message and your entry point to the thread is at the top (rather than in the middle with this setting disabled), but the message order still has the above quirks.

The issue is the same in my Office 365 mailbox and Hotmail.

I agree with you.  I will have 20-30 emails in a thread and they are jumbled up. Makes using the iPhone impossible for managing email. I hope apple gets this resolved soon.

Go into Settings > Mail and scroll down to THREADING. Turn on the Most Recent Message on Top setting to put them in order. It's still a bit weird, so you can turn off Organize by Thread if you like it the old way.

most recent isnt much help. Turning it off isn't the option either.  I've managed my Email my thread for along time it used to go into another window and give a list of emails associated with the thread.  I could easily select the one I was needing. Now I have to scroll 50 pages to find what Im needing. for a thread of 2 emails it migj work. Not when you have 30.

Totally agree, I have tried every option in threading and I can't get it back to the individual email list as you describe. So annoying and has slowed down my email productivity. Please Apple change it back.

Sreveals Jobs would've fired whoever thought this was a good idea. It is the most over-complicating change I've yet to see on an iOS update, and it's only purpose seems to be either driving people into hatred for ios10 OR migrating away from using Mail altogether.

Seriously, Apple: FIX THIS. It's absolutely awful.

Apple please look into this as it has made managing  mails almost impossible using iPhone. please look the mail application version before IOS 10 in that managing threads was straight forward as on clicking the thread it took to a different screen where it displayed all the emails in the thread as a seperate item and it was easy to chose one of your choice to respond to. Today in current version I don't even understand as it shows all the emails jumbled in one page. It is unusable. Or someone please suggest if only mail application can be reverted back somehow.

Mail app is basically useless for those, who try to use it professionally.

It may be OK if you receive a few e-mails a day, but if you want to keep track of a long threaded discussion then it's just no go.

I agree that whoever came up with this modification, and whoever has approved it should be long gone from Apple.

Yes, this iOS 10 "feature" is terrible. Please bring back the iOS 9 threaded message view! That was perfect.

With iOS 10, I can't understand any of the threads in either my work or personal mail. All of the replies are jumbled together with no rhyme or reason. I'm going to have to switch to another mail app if this isn't fixed soon.

Completely agree.  Need the list of messages back in order to efficiently find the particular message in the thread.  In the new disastrous interface, you have to scroll for miles and hope to recognize the feeble break between messages.  It also seems to include a ton more junk/code/crap in the email when the Organize by Thread option is on.  The changes maker there application almost useless to folks who rely in threaded conversations.

    OK. Here's a solution.

While I still think what Apple did to threaded emails is crap, apparently, there is now a double blue arrow toward the top right of every threaded email conversation.

When one clicks on this blue arrow, the ability to access individual emails within the thread is regained—it's an "expand/collapse" function, essentially.

This restores some of my faith in Apple iOS Mail—at least, as far as it is most critically concerned.

This change brings up a larger issue in Apple's platform: that when they release a new iOS, they explain very little.

I mean, perhaps this was demonstrated in the WWDC video somewhere, but who has the time to watch all of that crap? Plus, they rarely go into every minute function change.

Anyway. Still some other issues with the changes to Mail, but I hope this helps everyone.

I Have already tried that and while it does expand the threads its not solving the garbled message issue. Also from my Mac it's inconsistent with including all the thread or just a portion. Makes my email unusable.  A real mess with multi response threads. It's mixing text from one person with time stamps and signatures of another. Hope this is solved soon. Can't image how apple missed this since most professionals don't operate in a world of one time emails With no replies

The only solution I could find is to turn threading off all together. From a business, Email user's point of view, this update is completely useless.  I spent 10 minutes yesterday trying to reply to one email in the middle of a chain. It was  absolutely impossible. Only after turning threading off, then searching for the original email, could I reply to just that one message. Apple - please, please FIX this!
