Q: Mac Pro Mid 2010 & Tripple Head 4K
Hello,
im currently using my Mac Pro Mid2010 along with the default ATI Radeon 5870 1GB, 2x1 Displayport, 1x DVI, driving 3x Cinema 30" Displays at full resolution (f HD).
I would like to change that, since the Cinemas have really worn out over the years (6) (backlight is spotty and dim). So i have two choices:
- Get 3x 27/30" full HD Apple Cinemas or equivalent
- Get 3x 27/30"4K equivalents + card/adapters
Since i would like to keep the new monitors with my next mac (maybe in some years), i am little on the 4k side to be future-proof. But two questions arise:
- It can be a problem to find a video adapter (i found only one to drive 3x 4k: Sapphire HD 7950 Mac Edition 3GB; 2x Display Port, 1x HDMI) and still dont know about refresh rate (60Hz+ would be nice) and if OSX handles 3x 4k
- Is it really achievable to go for 4k with an Mid2010, or doesnt make any sense?
Any feedback highly appreciated!

Im glad to report this works perfectly, with boot screen, on my mac pro 5.1 Mid 2010:
1x GTX 980 Mac Edition + 3x LG 27UD88-W; all displays at full res 4K, 60Hz, and even highdpi works (at 6400x3600px per screen)
Case solved.
