Q: Using a SIM-card from another country, problems with contacts and messages

Hi!

I'm from Belgium, but I'm going to stay in Norway for at least a year. So I ordered a Norwegian SIM-card. All went well and now I have the Norwegian SIM-card in my iPhone 5s. Until I tried to send messages to a Belgian person from my contacts.

When I want to send a message in a conversation, or send a message in a new conversation (with a Belgian person I have in my contacts list), it doesn't get sent. First I thought that it was because I didn't have the Belgian country code in front of their numbers in my contacts. So I added the Belgian country code in front of their numbers, but it still doesn't work. This is really annoying.

Maybe the phone is still trying to send messages to the number from my contacts without the country code? And since I'm using a Norwegian SIM-card, maybe something is going wrong? A lot of my contacts and conversations got messed up now too, and Messages on my Mac is suddenly having problems as well.

What can I do to fix this?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

iPhone 5s, iOS 10

Since you got a Norwegian SIM, I'm guessing this means that you hooked your phone with a new carrier, and your iPhone is unlocked. Does your new plan support international tests/calling?

Yes, the phone is unlocked and I'm now with a new carrier that supports international texts.

I asked a (Belgian) person from my contacts to send me a message instead of me sending one to them, and that worked! His message arrived in the current conversation we had and now I can send messages back too. I guess my iPhone suddenly realised that it needed to send messages to an international number, and not a national number anymore (which was the case before).

So it seems like I need to ask every Belgian contact I have to send me a message first, before I can send them something?

If so, you may have typed in the country code wrong, or iMessage is being silly. Sometimes when I try to send a text message to an iMessage registered email address, it tells me that the address is not registered with iMessage, and only works once they have sent me a message.

    Good luck.

I'm sure I didn't type the country code wrong.

But now it seems like there's only one person where I still have the problem. I got a text from her but can't send one back. But I can call her though. Ugh this is so stupid.
