Q: can an unmounted internal hard disk crunch? running from SDcard where do the sounds come from?
Hi all,
My hard disk died and for deciding what to do next I wonder if there are other deaths due soon on my Mid 2010 iMac.
I am now using a sd card for the OS and unmounted the bad drive, I still hear crunches every 2 to 5 seconds. There is no other drive attached. I am quite sure it is not the fan because the sounds are irregular and like chrrch, chrrch.
Can an unmounted internal drive crunch? can it be anything else? The sound seems to come from the middle of the mac. can I test it somehow?
I´d be thankful for any related experiences!

There is a hardware test; however, for a mid 2010, you will need to use the original install disk #2:
Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support
Not sure if this will work with an unmounted hard drive (I'm not an expert on this, but why unmount it if it doesn't work?)
It might be best to make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar - diagnostics are free.
