Q: Synchronisation of faces between Mac Photos with iOS Photos

Hi

Currently managing photos in Photos on my Mac, I just upgraded to iOS 10 that provide also face recognition.

Will these be synchronised, will I have to define the faces on moth ends?

Same with albums...

I'm currently uploading to iCloud and don't see yet (even if 500 photos were uploaded) any changes or creation of new people (naming on the iPhone) and faces (name on the Mac).

Advices appreciated.

    I have the same question.

The Apple overview of Photos on Mac has been updated with some new features which are apparently available from 20 September with Sierra OS - e.g. global map to view locations of photos.

Hopefully there will be some functionality in there that will sync the face recognition between IOS and Sierra.

(I find face recognition very laborious - it would be easier if you could batch photos from albums and allocate to names, rather than having to individually find faces within photos.)

Not with the current software - from Apple Sierra previews it sounds likely when Sierra is released

Have a look at the iPhone User Guide for the new iOS 10. It has just been published:

    http://help.apple.com/iphone/10/#/iph9c7ee918c

    And it promises:

People are synced among devices where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID.

Now let's pray and hope that "devices" will include a Mac and not just the iOS devices.

I'm not hopeful, as my iPhone and iPad don't even accurately sync Faces in iOS10!

Has the face detection finished on your iPhone and iPad? On my iPhone it is still scanning faces, only 10% accomplished.

Perhaps it will be ready when Sierra goes public.

Yes mine has complete, as I only keep a small sub-section of my photos from my Mac on my iOS devices. The numbers of photos identified differ on my iPhone vs my iPad.

Then you are not using iCloud Photo Library? Probably the syncing requires iCloud Photo Library.

No, I don't trust iCloud Photo Library. My master library sits on my Mac and I sync elements to my iOS devices as required.

This is interesting, as I'm reading from several sources on the web that People settings are not syncing by design across iOS devices due to privacy concerns?? All of my apple devices are on the same ID and no changes are being syncd, either between iOS devices or my Mac (albeit I'm still on el capitan).

Not quite sure if this is the case: if it is then I dont understand it as all the photos are in the cloud in the first place with location and date metadata?

As it stands this is a monumental pain having to make changes on each individual device - spent hours sorting out the library on the Mac and I dont expect to have to repeat the exercise on an ipad and then again on an iPhone! I use icloud Photo Library and expected this to enable this functionality.

I had to name the faces on four Mac for 40000 photos each while on Yosemite and El Capitan. I never want to have to do that again. I am really hoping macOS Sierra will finally bring the syncing of faces names.  What is the used of a synced, unified Photo library in iCloud, if the task that requires the most work is not synced to the other devices?

I can understand that for shared albums, but for devices  that are sharing one library in iCloud for the same user?  And the faces names synced already in Yosemite as searchable faces tags, just the faces thumbnails were missing.
