Q: iPad no longer charges from Computer after update to iOS 10

Since I've updated to IOS 10 on my iPad Air 2, it will not charge using my computer (An iMac) or when connected to my car.  It worked before I updated.  Any idea how to get this to work again?

Before I upgraded I charged my phone on my computer with no issues, and never any issues.  Once I upgraded, my computer will not charge the phone when it is sleeping.  It also intermittently stops charging the phone.  I always plug it into my computer over night with the laptop closed, when I wake up it is fully charged.  I did that last night and woke up with 2% battery.  Something is askew with the update.

    I believe you.

We users are all just "guessing" at the cause & mgdell's "miraculous healing"

OK, I'll say it if bobseufert won't, "I Dunno!"

I actually suggest that you do what mgdell did during his chat with Apple

    REBOOT

    WAIT AWHILE

Check for joy - no joy

IF no joy, Contact Apple Support like mgdell did

Same issue here. I have an iPad Air 1 which can no longer charge from my Macbook Pro. Worked fine before the update this morning and charges fine from the wall. Tried 3 different cables, two official Apple ones, rebooted both the mac and the iPad. No joy.

Hover my iPad Pro works fine. Interestingly enough, the 'Pro gave me the "new user" screen showing "Hello" in many languages (no Esperanto though), and it charges fine. The Air never gave me that on-boarding choreography.

Same advice. Reboot. Wait. If no joy, call Apple.

I guess 3 reports does not "prove it conclusively" quite yet... but it certainly is building up the pile of evidence

please DO report back whatever the outcome - a couple of folks here can make sure that at least some Apple folks get the message IF we get solid proof.

    YIKES!

    REALLY gremlin driven.

At bottom, we are not gonna solve this here in the forum.

You have two folks here that have the same issue.

When "a small number of users" (Apple likes that phrase) have a problem, Apple's choice is to handle them on a case-by-case basis "quietly".

    Call 'em.

Get a trouble ticket # and give them your callback # right up front - because you will CERTAINLY need t be transferred up the ladder of experienced specialists - remembering that this is NEW to them too!

    Let us know, amigo

I read a similar report. A "workaround" to get the iPhone iPad charged.

The point is that the iPhone iPad is SUPPOSED to charge from USB connection to computer or car and DOES NOT

Updated to iOS 10 yesterday, against my better judgement, and tonight I wasted time on the phone with Apple.  They claim that there is no issue with iOS10 causing the "not charging" indication.  They wanted me to bring it in for repair.   I always charged my iPad using the charger that came with the iPad and a 6' generic lighting cable or a 3' Apple lighting cable from my laptop (a slower charge).  Never a problem for 1 year and now, since yesterday, the only way to charge the iPad is to use the charger and cable that came with it.  "NO, APPLE DIDN'T DO IT!!"

Unreal. My iPad was plugged in and charging on my desk. I get the notification to upgrade to iOS10. The update completes, and now the iPad says, "Not Charging". Same cable, same charger, same power strip - SAME DESK. Tried rebooting, no help. Does this mean my iPad will eventually die and be useless?

I have the same problem here.  Upgraded iOS and iTunes.  Immediately afterwards my iPad no longer appears in iTunes (although it shows up as a connected USB device under System Information).  And it says "not charging".

@danreilly I read their help section on charging this morning, and it says to make sure the computer is awake.  I have found that all of my iOS 10 devices now only charge when the computer is awake. My wife still has iOS 9 and the phone charges when the computer is awake or asleep.  It is definitely the iOS that caused it, all my devices charged with the computer until the update.  Hopefully they will acknowledge it and fix it.

Thank you for the reply, but I haven't been connected to my computer. Just the same wall charger that was working fine prior to the iOS10 upgrade. You think maybe I need to connect to my Mac at home (I'm at the office)?

    EDIT:

BTW - this wall charger works fine on my iPhone 6+, which was upgraded to iOS10 last night.

@danreilly Is it an apple brand charger or third party?  I have heard that some people are experiencing issues with third party chargers after the upgrade as well.

I am using the OEM Apple square wall charger, but an after-market cable. Think brand loyalty is the issue?
