Q: Photos not in date order

Even though I've selected View>Sort>Keep Sorted By Date (Greyed out) my photos are not sorted by date and time when looking at them in "Moments". The photos in question include pictures from my iPhone and SLR camera that I imported.

 

I might add that pictures taken with my iPhoto appear to be the photos listed first in each date and are followed by pictures imported from a camera. The date and times appear to be sorted correctly within each category (iPhone and imported).

What actions do I need to take to keep the photo sorted by date and time?

You have probably to adjust the date for the photos taken with one of your cameras.

Photos is not showing the timezones it uses when interpreting the time stamps of the photos. 

 

If your photos have been taken in different timezones, you have to ensure that Photos is using the correct time zone for each batch of photos you imported. If you import photos, the Photos.app will use the time zone of the current system time to interpret the time stamps, if it cannot infer the time zone from the GPS data.

 

Use the command "Image > Adjust Date & Time" for the photos you imported while being in a different time zone than the time zone the photos have been taken in. You can set a different time zone there.

    Thank you, but it doesn't appear to be a time zone issue. For example when I examine a given "moment" of one 12 hour period, the iPhoto pictures have times ranging from 9AM to 5PM and are listed in sequence. Then the pictures imported from my camera follow and have times also from 9AM to 5PM. It seems as though Photos wants to keep each camera origin separate.

    Have the photos been taken at a different location?

    The moments are grouped by the location and the capture date, not only by the capture date.

    A moment is a group of photos and videos taken around the same time and in the same place—for example, an afternoon at the beach.

    If you create an own album, you can sort it by the date only.

    I created albums for each location. But only the iPhoto pictures have locations built in. The imported photos only have dates. As I dig down further it appears that Photos sorts pictures within an album by date by source. In other words for September 1st all the iPhotos are sorted by date/time and are followed by all the imported photos by date/time. So I have two strings of photos for September 1st. The two sources are kept separate.

     

    There doesn't appear to be a way to sort the two sources so that they are integrated and sorted by date within an album.

    And did you set the sort order for this album to "Date"? Otherwise the photos will just appear in the order you added them to the album.

    Ctrl-click the album and select "Sort > Keep sorted by   > Keep sorted by Oldest First"Screen Shot 2016-09-15 at 21.49.07GMT.png

    Yes, I did exactly as you suggested. It does sort the pictures by date and time but keeps the two types (iPhone and imported) separate. So at least I have the photos sorted by date but they continue to be separated by these two categories.

    Then the date and time of one of the categories are interpreted incorrectly.

    can you identify two photos, one from the iPhone and one from the camera, taken at the same lac at the same time, then open each of them with "Image > Adjust Date and Time"?  Compare all entries in the "Adjust" panel. Is there an of set in the current time? Is the timezone shown at the bottom of the panel different?

    You're correct. I should have picked up on this earlier in our thread. The issue was the time zone. the times of the pictures from the two sources were identical but the time zones were different.

    You're welcome It would be much easier to spot such a problem, if it were possible to display the times in Photos with the time zone suffix. Then we could see at a glance, if date and time are sorted correctly.

    It is ridiculous, that two photos might be showing the same time, e.g.. 8am, but are using different timezones, without indicating the time zone.
