Which version of Photos are you using?

What should work is to ctrl-click or right lick or double tap the photo embedded in the mail, then use "Export to Photos" from the contextual menu that will pop up.  You you will see the Photos icon bounce in the Dock to show that the photo has been added.

Look at the bottom of the "All Photos" album for the imported image. It will not show in "Last Import".

Obviously that's what I tried, and it doesn't work.

Photos "bounces" but does not import the photo.

I had to "Save to Downloads" and then Import via Photos.

    It does work for me.

It takes a few minutes for the photos to appear in photos.

And it will depend on your version of Photos where you will find the photos.

    • In Yosemite you will have to go to the correct moment for the date of the photo. So check the date of the files you are importing.
    • In the latest version of El Capitan the photos will be at the end of the "All Photos" album.

But they will not be added to the Last Import album.

What never worked and is buggy is the "Save Attachment" button:

Only the contextual menu and ctrl-clicking/right clicking  works.

Have you waited long enough and checked the correct moment for the date of your photo?

    Photos Version 1.5 (370.42.0)  &  Mail Version 9.3 (3124)

This issue creeps up every now and then.  In this case, since the latest "security" update.  I have to save the photo(s) and then import them to Photos.

With the work library currently at 99 GB, what is really frustrating is having to let the library load, then scroll all the way to the end to find my newly imported photo(s).  This is ridiculous.  It should auto go into "Last Import" folder, -- or -- they could easily create a new "Imported From Mail" folder.

    Just my $0.02 worth.

then scroll all the way to the end to find my newly imported photo(s).

Scrolling down to the bottom of an album is one click into the scroll bar of the All Photos album, if you have the scroll bar enabled to show and have it set to jump to the spot clicked in the System Preferences > General.

I find that Photos is much more user friendly, if the Scroll bars are always showing. At least I can see at a glance, which panels are supposed to be scrolled, for example the Adjustments panel.

You are correct about the scroll bar.  And I do that.  Still, my point is having to do that is ridiculous.

You are right, it would be preferable, if the photo were in the Last Import, but the advantage of using the command "Add to Photos" in Mail is, that Photos does not need to launch. The application window will not open, and you do not have to bother with Photos, if you want to continue with other tasks. if you drag the attached photo from the Mail window to the Photos icon in the Dock, Photos will launch and use a different way of import, and the photo will appear in the Last Import album. But you will have to close Photos again and dismiss it, if you do not want to deal with the added photo right away.
