Q: iOS 10 update turns phone into "demo phone"

I updated my iPhone 6SE to iOS10 and suddenly both outgoing and incoming calls (i am a customer of Latvian Mobile Telephone/LMT in Latvia) are cut off after 5 minutes with a popup saying the phone is a "demo". This is pretty crazy, as I have a flat rate contract with unlimited local calls.

I spent a lot of time on Skype with some very helpful Apple Support people in the US and factory restored the phone, even got it to recover most of my apps and contacts (too many contacts, as it gathered every contact from all my devices, and all I needed was phone numbers), but some vital files (Notes) were blank so I restored from earlier backups on my MacBook. These seemed to revive the "demo demon".

Has anyone encountered this and what can be done?

Take the phone back to whoever you bought it from. I suspect it was hacked to run a 'standard' version of iOS. It never should have been sold at retail, and may very well be stolen.

Thanks. But I bought the phone online last spring from Apple, had it delivered to my son, a student at NYU, who sent it to me in Latvia via a mutual friend who flew over and delivered the phone in its shrink-wrapped box. Paid full price for the phone.  Another oddity is that the General setting section lacked the Restrictions menu, which appeared when the phone was factory restored, as did the ability to download app updates straight to the phone. That function also seemed to have been disabled, I could only update attaching the phone to iTunes on my MacBook.

Then contact Apple directly, or have your son do so. Something is wrong. There may have been a mixup in shipping. You should not have been given that phone.
