Q: Apple TV 4 photo issues

I am on my second day with the new Apple TV 4.  I am not happy with it.

I use my Apple TV a lot to have music on while displaying my pictures when I have people over.  I was hoping that with this new generation Apple would have fixed the issue where pictures repeat themselves way too often and not all pictures in my library are shown.  Instead, it's worse.  I have home sharing on, and I have about 1100 photos shared. On my ATV I choose the shared images folder to be my screen saver.  However, after about 40 images or so, they start all over again and display in the same order again.  This is very annoying.

So I tried going to the shared folder and pressing "Start Slideshow", instead.  What happens with that is that 7 images are shown and then it goes back to the first image and that image stays on the screen until I press something.  I tried it at least 10 times with the same results each time.  The pictures were different each time, but the behavior was the same: after 7 pictures it shows the first picture and leaves it on the screen.

Is anybody else experiencing this?  Is there a way to get the ATV to randomly show ALL my pictures as a screen saver instead of cycling through 40-50 images and then repeating them in the same sequence again?

Just updated and photo shuffle seems to be working.  Now maybe they can get pause to work again.

Yep, it seems 9.2.1 finally fixed the random repetition of pictures. But that's pretty much it. Compared with ATV 2 and ATV 3, this is still a downgrade. You can only start a slideshow from the first pic in an album, and no slideshow settings for background music (yes, you can manually go and play an album or playlist and then go to and run the slideshow... but all that was part of the slideshow settings and it was taken off). Except for my curiosity, I've pretty much given up on the ATV 4. As long as my old ATV 2 works I'll keep using it and then I'll get something else. $150 plus a lot of head scratching... nope

It still *****. It should at least match what is in Mac's Photos in 1st version... and then evolve to a better experience than any media server. But they wouldn't make easy money with that, right?

921 still doesn't fix the issue for me. ive had atv's since version 1 and loved them but now there are so many problems with the atv4 I regret ever buying it.

whats happened at Apple? I used to love everything they did, now with every new release they take away something useful and replace it with a "new and improved " piece of rubbish. I miss the old Apple.

Seriously making me rethink the whole apple experience. Long time user, but these little bugs keep getting worse. I upgraded from ATV3 because it kept making me authorize every channel, every day. Now, after I spent practically a whole weekend sorting through photos and uploading them to icloud, my tv repeats maybe 30 of them IN THE SAME ORDER. Amateur hour. My company phone is already android, maybe chromecast is worth testing out.

This has been a Day One issue with ATV4.

I was patient, assuming that Apple support read these pages and would schedule a bug fix to this very basic feature, displaying photos in sequence and without crashing.  Now 9 months have passed.

I payed the high price for ATV4 vs other products because I expected traditional Apple high quality and seamless interoperation with my Apple devices. Not so.

It seems like Tom Cook and the current BOD are no longer focused on product innovation and superior product quality and instead are distracted by being green and social justice issues.

    Go into iTunes

    File from the menu bar
    Home Sharing

Choose photos to share with Apple TV

    Select all (or your choice)
    Go into your AppleTV

    Settings

    Screensaver
Make sure you are signed into your iCloud accounts
Make sure home sharing is on

    select photos as your screensaver

That is what worked for me.

DaveDawg330. Thank you, but I believe that only works if your mac is left connected to your network. This won't work for me as my laptop is not always at home. I think most people want this to work with just the Apple TV powered on.

I talked with Apple twice today...not what I expected to learn...
Due to the cashe on ATV being used heavily for the screensaver for iCloud photos, Apple decided to part ways with getting iCloud photos as a stand alone screensaver. ATV needs to be available to stream music and videos and photos was clogging the user experience, is the explanation.
If you can not use the home sharing method, you are out of luck because what remains is picking photo stream, but there are only so many photos you will get to see over and over as everyone previously mentioned.
    Hope this answers some questions.

No idea who you talked to or what you talked about, but both iCloud photos and homesharing can be used as a screensaver and there is no need to keep things connected.

You can use iCloud photos, but you will see the same 40-100 photos on loop. This is the problem we would like to be solved. This was not the case on the ATV3. I wish they would give you the option to download the photos locally to the ATV4.

That's not correct, you were also limited to a restricted set of photos on the Apple TV 3 for the screensaver.
