Q: iOS10 - News widget : "Couldn't Load Stories"

Does anyone know why this might be?

I'm located in France, but using my iPhone 6 in English.  After initial update to iOS10, stories were showing up in the widget, too many in fact.  I turned them off, but then discovered other news categories and turned those on.  They work fine in the News app (as do some of the originals, not all because of region) but nothing is showing in the widget (swipe-right from Home screen).

    HI there,

Did you figure out how to make the widget work?

I'm having the same problem.  I'm a Canadian user, but using the Phone under the "United States" Region.  This is a workaround for getting Apple News content in other countries.  I'm guessing you are setup in a similar way.  I wonder if actual United States users are experiencing the problem - or if it's just out of country users.

    Is this intentional DICTATORSHIT?!?

Apple biased in some way "OMG Trump's winning"

    Smells like cheap old spice!

    Politics is so old!

    "Mad"

    "fewh..."

Replying to my own question ... and hopefully saving some of you some wasted time.

I restored my iPhone a few times to understand what is happening.  Starting from a fresh install of iOS10, the News Widget is populated with stories as you would expect.  It works fine *until* you open the News.app.  As soon as you do that, the widget is no longer populated with stories and instead you get the "Couldn't Load Stories" message.

NB, News.app requests to use your location the first time you run it.  It says that this is only for weather information.  Allowing or Denying makes no difference to the widget's behaviour.  In previous iOS's it did.

So, it appears that whilst Apple are happy to feed you news stories in the News.app, they are not allowing you to view those in the widget *unless* you are in one of the approved countries.  I would call this a bug.  Perhaps Apple disagree, or perhaps they would consider the bug to be that we can see them at all, News.app or widget.

    Either way, it's sloppy.

(As an aside : Restoring the phone was a mistake.  More sloppy work from Apple, can be seen in iTunes, because when it says 'backing up', it doesn't actually mean it.  My backup prior to restore didn't actually backup anything.  So I lost 6 months of messages I'd rather have kept.  Makes me think of Phil Schiller and his presentations where he constantly tells us how 'amazing' and 'really incredible' things are.  Yes Phil ... 'really ******* incredible'.)

Thanks for this! Although, I don't think the issue is related to the country but the account. In my case, I've got a Spanish account but I'm living in the U.K. (One of the approved countries), however Im expericning the same issue. Hope it helps

    Well done fibilt!

I have both UK and French based iTunes accounts with separate Apple IDs (PITA.  I wish Apple would just let have one *international* ID).

I switched to the UK account on iPhone/Settings/'iTunes and App Stores'.  Restarted the phone and presto!  Widget is populated.

Unfortunately ... it only shows UK news.  I was hoping it would show the news items I have selected as favourites in the News.app preferences.

Well, I'm having the same issue with a UK account based in the UK... So it would appear there's more to it than just location. Hopefully someone arrives at a fix soon!

I'm in the middle of the US with my US account and I have the same issue on my iPad Pro.  Rebooted, checked that notifications were turned on and that location services was active.  Still the widget says "couldn't load stories" on my iPad.  The News app works just fine.  I've tried connecting via wifi and also via my iPhone's mobile hotspot.  The widget works normally on my iPhone 6S.

    HI guys.

I also have this issue that drives me mad.

I Live in Mexico but I always had the US region selected so I could enjoy the news app.

Well, a few minutes ago I was checking some settings and I found out that if I went back to my real region "Mexico" the

news widget works. But, obyously the app is gone. I have tryed a combination of region and languages but no one would work. Just going back to Mexico.

So I recommend changing to a random region and see if something changes.

IT is a shame that I can't get both...
