Sep 15, 2016 1:05 PM in response to Gino942by KiltedTim,If it's activation locked (Find My iPhone Activation Lock - Apple Support) you don't.
There is no way to bypass the activation lock. Only the owner of the account used to lock it can remove the lock.

Sep 15, 2016 1:11 PM in response to KiltedTimby Gino942,it isn't a activation lock. the iPhone is on and working. all I want to do is reset it to factory defualts. when I go into settings and select the option to "erase all content and settings", it tells me to enter in the apple id passcode. which i do not know

Sep 15, 2016 1:14 PM in response to Gino942by KiltedTim,If it was the Apple ID password, that's because it is signed into an iCloud account and Find My iPhone is turned on, which means Activation Lock IS enabled.
You can force it into recovery mode and restore it with iTunes, but when it's done, you'll be left with a brick as it will require the iCloud ID and password that was used on it previously in order to activate.

Sep 15, 2016 1:16 PM in response to FoxFifthby Gino942,my friend was given the phone from his boss, then he gave it to me. it is not his phone. he does not know the code
-
Sep 15, 2016 1:18 PM in response to Gino942by FoxFifth,Then he will have to get his boss to help. I don't know how to state it more clearly -- there is no option if you don't have the password and the only one that Apple will help is the person whose Apple ID it is.

Sep 15, 2016 1:20 PM in response to Gino942by KiltedTim,And as soon as you attempt to reset it, it will become a brick. Activation lock is tied to Find My iPhone, which is tied to the iCloud account that's signed in. You can't turn off FMiP or remove the iCloud account without the password for the account. If you put it into recovery mode and restore it without removing the account, you will have to enter the ID and password that was used on it before you will be able to activate it. That's what Activation lock is.
If your friend can't or won't remove the account from the phone, then give it back to them. Sooner or later, it's going to turn into a brick.
