Q: possible bug in calendar alerts in El Capitan

Sometimes I don't get an alert for events in the calendar.  I have already made sure that all settings in the calendar preferences are correct, and system notifications preferences are correct.  My event is also correct, and the event date and time are correct.  For example, this morning I had an event set for 9am, with alert to happen 15 min. before the event (default).  I turned on the computer well after 9am, but never got the alert.  I did however get an alert for an event tomorrow, which is Full Moon, a feed from a Google calendar for moon phases.

In your example, your alert was to occur at 8:45AM.  But then you say:

So you're expecting something to remember that at the time of the alert, the computer was "off", so let's send the alert later.  But perhaps you're using a non-local (e.g., iCloud) calendar and therefore may have received the alert on some other device (e.g., iPhone, Apple Watch).

If your computer were powered on at 8:45AM and the alert did not occur, then I could understand your conclusion there is a software defect.  But in your scenario, there may well be other circumstances that justify not sending this alert or remembering there was some alert that was not sent on the computer.

I believe that calendar alerts do work that way normally.  So if the alert was set for 8:45am, and I turned my computer on at 10am, the alert would basically come up immediately.  I am not using the Cloud... there are no other devices, just my mac mini all by itself.

It happened again today.  2 events at 9:00am ... I never got alerts for them.  I turned my computer on after 9:00am... let's say 11:00am.  Again, I have already made sure that all settings in the calendar preferences are correct, and system notifications preferences are correct.  My events are also correct, and the event date and time are correct.

I am looking for a good calendar app similar to OS X Calendar, to replace it.

I replaced OS X Calendar with Planner Pro from the App Store.

Same result – both OS X Calendar and Planner Pro both will not produce an alert, either sometimes or all of the time, when the computer is turned on AFTER the event.  I'm almost sure I've seen it working with OS X Calendar, but I've also seen it failing with both apps.

I would prefer to use OS X Calendar, so I'm wondering if anyone knows if this is a known bug, and if not, how do I submit a bug report?

    thanks!

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.

Or you can use your Apple ID to register with this site and go the Apple BugReporter. Supposedly you will get an answer if you submit feedback.
