Q: I can neither connect my iPhone nor my iPad mini after upgrading to ios10

Hey guys,

so I upgraded my iPhone 5s as well as my iPad mini 2 to iOS10 today. I couldn't find any problems on my devices so far. Everything seemed to be ok. But now I wanted to sync new music from my iMac to the iPhone but upon connecting the usb cable, iTunes only gives me an error message. My system runs in German so I can only give you a translation of the error message which might not be how it reads in english. The message says something like: "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone since there is an invalid response".

The same error message comes up when I connect my updated iPad mini. My guess is that my version of iTunes is not compatible with iOS10. I'm still running an old iMac from 2006 with OSX 10.7. The newest version of iTunes that I can install is 12.2.2.25. When I try to download a newer version from the apple download page, the browser automatically reverts back to 12.2.2. and wants to download that version. Are there any workarounds or is there a compatible version of iTunes in the making? Does somebody have the same problem and can he/she confirm it has to do with iTunes?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Because you can't run the latest version of iTunes on a Mac running v10.7 Lion (very outdated OS X) see if your Mac can upgrade to El Capitan > Upgrade to OS X El Capitan

That way you would be able to run iTunes 12.5.1then update your devices to iOS 10.

iOS 10 requires the latest version of iTunes, 12.5.1. That also requires OS X 10.9.5.

    Mac System Requirements

    • Mac computer with an Intel processor
    • To play 720p HD video, an iTunes LP, or iTunes Extras, a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor is required
    • To play 1080p HD video, a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor and 2GB of RAM is required
    • Screen resolution of 1024x768 or greater; 1280x800 or greater is required to play an iTunes LP or iTunes Extras
    • Broadband Internet connection to use Apple Music, the iTunes Store, and iTunes Extras
    • Apple combo drive or SuperDrive to create audio, MP3, or back-up CDs; some non-Apple CD-RW recorders may also work. Songs from the Apple Music catalog cannot be burned to a CD.

    • OS X version 10.9.5 or later
    • 400MB of available disk space
    • Apple Music, Apple Music Radio, iTunes in the Cloud, and iTunes Match availability may vary by country
    • iTunes Extras require OS X version 10.10.3 or later

Thanks for the quick replies. Unfortunately I can't upgrade to a newer version of OSX since Lion is the last one that supports my Computer. I would love to but it is not possible. I could try to use Macpostfactor as a workaround but even with this I would just be able to install 10.8.

So that means I am stuck with my devices and can't even make backups on my computer anymore. That's just perfect. Why is there no warning prior to installing an update? If there would have been one I would have left my devices with iOS9.

And it just became worse. I also can't connect my Phone to iPhoto or digital pictures anymore. That means I can't safe my photos on my Computer anymore. And I also don't have the means to buy a new computer. I feel so angry right now.

Unfortunately this „update-trap" is not so well communicated by Apple!

My Mac-hardware faces the same system limitations as yours. I won’t update my iPhone to iOS 10 to keep on syncing via iTunes 12.2.2..

For you to download files like pics, videos, pdfs etc. from your iOS 10-iPhone you can use an iOS app like GoodReader. You import/export the pics/files into/to the app and then you transfer via "Wifi-transfer" or more comfortable you sync via a shared folder with your iMac (as a AFP-Server). Both should work well with your *local* WiFi.

Hope this was a little help.

    HI

You need to upgrade your OS X and use itiunes 12.5.1. Unfortunately your OS X and computer are too old. There is no work around.

This is absolutely unacceptable! I have the same situation. Upgraded my iPhone to iOS 10 and found out I can no longer connect it to my perfectly healthy 2007 MacBook running Mac OS X 10.7.5 with iTunes 12.2.2, neither to sync nor to import photos. There should have been a big warning for this. It's a good enough reason for a lawsuit.

I have same problem.....ios 10 & iTunes 11.4 on snow leopard ... spoke to Apple today but there seems no likelihood that they will do a patch to cure this problem... I'm not sure that it's even possible..!! very frustrating and they should have warned us... not good at all...

Only cure is to go and spend £kkk on a new iMac....Ggrrrrrrrrr

Hey guys, good to hear that I'm not alone although I'd prefer that nobody has to cope with the same problem that I do. Here is what I came up with as a workaround:

    • Syncing pictures not possible anymore neither via "digital pictures" app nor iPhoto --> Fotostream still works. But doesn't include videos
    • No more backups via iTunes --> iCloud Backup
    • Syncing music via USB no longer working --> iTunes Match does the job.

The other possible solution would be to abandon OSX and go all in on Windows 10 which still runs on my 10 year old computer, although Apple doesn't support it anymore. Pictures can be transferred via USB even videos can be imported. The newest version of iTunes is running and therefore backups can also be done with it. The only downside is that it is not possible anymore to use iPhoto to organize pictures. I have decided to go for the All-cloud solution to the problem and import videos in windows.

And I have decided to finally get a new computer in a few months but it won't be an original mac. I clearly won't give them my money anymore. A well set up hackintosh can run osx as well if not better, it will be cheaper and much more easily upgradeable. Check this out if you are interested: tonymacx86.com
