Q: how the **** do you get rid of the suggestions on the front page of my phone?

I have just upgraded the software on my iphone 6. It is now slower, and connecting far less easily than previously...

What is really annoying me is when I hit the home button after it has been asleep for a while, I get this page with sire app suggestions, news and other my calandar.  All I want is to get into the my phone--none of the other crap. And it now takes me even longer to actually get into the phone--I like it the way I had it set up--I'm not interested in Apple mucking around with my phone without my permission! I have disabled siri and anything else I can think of and it is all the same--the really irritating thing is the news component is the right wing nutters who I am in no way interested in supporting.

Please, please can someone tell me how to get this crap off my phone???

You should not get that unless you swipe left to right on the lock screen.

tried that, swiping one way gets me to the camera which is fine, swiping the other way brings up the siri app suggestions, news and calendar, I either have to hit the home button again or swipe again--I really just want them gone

For the news: you may want to change the widgets you've got! When you've got the screen full of widgets (Siri App suggestions, Calendar, etc.), scroll down to the bottom, and choose Edit. Then you can re-order, get rid of, and add widgets. At least then you can choose what widgets you'll see.

You may also be using Apple News, and perhaps want to change your settings there, but Apple News doesn't exist in my region so I know next to nothing about it. I'd guess the "right wing nutter" stuff you talk about comes from either widgets or Apple News settings that you can change. (Or Facebook notifications?)

You may also want to go into Settings app, and choose "Notifications" - you can turn notifications for different apps on or off.

("Notifications": on your home screen, the one with all the apps, swipe down from the top of the screen; "Widgets": from your home screen, swipe to the right, and the widgets will appear.)

On what happens when you pick up the phone: you've got an iPhone 6, and I'm not sure how exactly iOS 10 is supposed to behave with that. But now with my iPhone SE the screen automatically comes on when I lift up the phone, showing notifications; I then needed to actually push the home button with my thumb (fingerprint lock) to get the useful screens. I personally found that slower and annoying, so I went into Settings / General / Accessibility / Home Button, and then toggled "Rest Finger to Open" to "On" (the default is off). For my iPhone, that means I turn on the phone the same way as I did with iOS 9, but the same may not apply for you. Now I just rest my thumb on the button and the phone takes me to an "active" screen, no pushing required.

Thank you that was a exceedingly helpful and thoughtful reply--I have taken all the widgets off using the edit button.  Now when I go to open the phone, and swipe I get a small 'edit' sign which takes me nowhere.........and I still have to hit my home button twice to get the code pad to put my code in (it used to be one previously before this crazy upgrade).  I did as you suggested and went in and change the 'rest finger on home page' thing but it has not changed anything. I have a very strong case on my phone as I am outdoors a lot and so the fingerprint setting does not work which is why I have to punch in my code all the time.

I'm also interested to hear what the Apple people say about this...

Oh, I may see what's happening: I think the "swipe to unlock" gesture is totally gone now (unless it can be reactivated in settings somewhere?). Now, when you pick up the phone and swipe, you're telling the phone to go to that widgets page - you're no longer telling it to unlock.

Instead, just pick up the phone, and don't swipe - just press the home button once. That should take you to the passcode entry.

Apple is expecting us to all unlearn that "swipe to unlock" gesture. (Again, with the proviso that things may be different with the iPhone 6.)

I had the exact same question about the suggestions screen. It was really frustrating. After searching the web I finally found the answe. https://www.google.com/amp/www.cnet.com/google-amp/news/settings-to-change-right -away-on-ios-10/?client=safari
