Q: Apple, please improve "hide" photo

IOS: 10.0.1

OS X: 10.11.6

I have some lovely photos of my wife breast feeding our baby, which my wife and I consider very personal and would like to keep them private.  On the other hand, we have amazing photos that we like to show family and friends when they come over.  Normally we would do this by opening the "Photos" app and just scroll through all the happy memories in the "All Photos" album (scrolling even quicker past the boring photos of receipts, places we park etc.).

We can no longer casually do that as we have photos that are private that do not actually get hidden from the "All Photos" album even if they are marked as hidden; this is a design fail, please fix it.

iPhone 6, iOS 10, null

This is a user to user help forum. You are not addressing Apple here.

To submit your comments directly to Apple use this link http://www.apple.com/feedback/

You you could create an album of all the photos that you want to show to others.

Thanks for the link; I've communicated the issue there.

As for the suggestion to create an album in order to show others... it works, but it's a horrible work-around to the poor design of the "hide" function.

it works, but it's a horrible work-around to the poor design of the "hide" function.

The name "Hide" is wrong for the function. Photos simply has no real hiding (as in keeping photos secret and away from prying eyes), and I doubt that Apple wanted to provide a feature to keep photos secret.

The purpose of "hiding" as implemented is completely different. It is a feature to weed out Moments and Collections, to make them more manageable, without having to delete photos. It is necessary, because we cannot remove photos from the moments without deleting them, since moments are created automatically. Photos you do not want to show in albums either have to be deleted from the library.

I would move very private photos to a different Photos Library. iOS 10 and the new Memories feature, the new places are all giving priority to photos with persons in them, and they will use the hidden photos as well. I just noticed that the new photos on iOS 10 picked the hidden photos as key photos on the map, because they were the only photos with persons in them. You will see the hidden photos in the Memories as well. See this help page on how to use multiple libraries on your Mac:  https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.0/?lang=en#/pht6d60b524

    Hi Léonie

    Thanks for the reply.

Yep, I understand the current implementation... and my point is that it's not very good.  Any suggested work-arounds are just that, work-arounds for poor design

A hiding to keep photos secret has been requested since Photo first came out. There are many discussions here requesting this feature. We have to keep badgering Apple by sending feature requests to provide it. Some features have been brought back by Apple with the recent releases of photos.

There have been equally many discussions in the Aperture Aperture forum and iPhoto forum, where Hiding has been implemented differently and is hiding the photos from albums, and the users have not been satisfied with the implementation in Aperture and iPhoto either.

If you leave the Mac unattended while logged in, anybody can unhide the photos. Even in the good old days the only way to keep private photos private has been to keep them in a separate library, and to move this library onto a password protected sparse bundle. Or keep them in a different user account with a different password.

There are 3rd party solutions go get totally hidden Photos on your iPhone.  I use InVault which removes the images from all locations on the iPhone and puts them in a password/fingerprint protected "value".

InValult and other similar apps can be gotten from the App Store.  I keep pictures of all my credit cards, driver license, etc. in it so if I lose my wallet I can contact the companies to cancel them, etc.
