Q: Lost my site after HD was switched

Is it possible that switching a HD from one computer to another one causes my iWeb site to go MIA? The one I have had for 9 years  now! I just opened it up and it's asking me if I want to build a site. OMG. I have been thinking of switching -talk about a kick in the butt. I guess I will look at Everweb? I'll look at archives and see what others recommend. In the meanwhile, if anyone can figure this out..nothing else got lost in the move...

It's not only possible, it is to be expected.

If you move a HD from one computer to another, the files on that disc are now on the other computer.

To retrieve the domain file (that's what iWeb needs and creates if it is not in the default location) use this handy tool :

Well yes, of course it will.  If you switch hard drives from one computer to another, then you need to go to the computer that you have put the hard drive in and look on that one to find your iWeb site files.  These site files won't be on the other hard drive if the site was not stored on that hard drive in the first place or copied.

Look on the other computer to find the files.

Other than that, re-build your site using a new application such as EverWeb.

Thanks. I figured that was the case. I looked in the Library on the current one and it is not there. Would it be in the Library of the origianl computer? Although that one died just as we were switching over. At this point, I am looking at a new Macbook or Air, so maybe I should wait? I really don't know how to save copies of website on a computer (newbie) so I don't want to go thru that aggravation again. For now, Go Daddy is hosting and has a copy of what I have so far so I am good for now.

Thanks but the other computer has bit the dust. I will have to start from scratch. I was hoping it was hiding somewhere but I knew I had to bid goodbye to iWeb at some point.

Do you have a tTime Machine backup of your older computer? Or any backup that includes your full Home folder including the Library folder? Then you could try to restore the Domain.sites2 file you need to move to your new computer.

Well no, the copy that GoDaddy has of your website is not a useable copy of it - it is an html copy because it is published and iWeb cannot use or import html, so it is those all important iWeb site files that you need to find.

Either that or start from scratch.  With Mac OS Sierra coming along, iWeb may well not work any longer with this.

Thanks. I think I have resigned myself to starting over. I know this group is heavy on Everweb. Not sure if it's because it's similar to iWeb? I'll do some research in the archives and see what most have migrated to. I want to be able to go in and change and add as I please, like I did with iWeb. Anyone know if you have that flexibility with others like Wix, Weebly, etc?
