Q: Issue with Memories on Photos

Hi, after installing iOS 10 I've let it do all the syncing the Memories tab required (I have quite a big iCloud photo library - more than 100gb)... At the beginning it appeared to work, but now it's still stuck on three days ago, and the memories are always the same. The date on top is three days ago, and also the "a day to remember" memory is related to that date. Is this normal? Because I suppose it should be up to date, and show me what happened THIS present day, years ago.

Thanks!

Has the scan for faces finished?

When you open the people album, you should be seeing some thing like "xxx Photos scanned. To finish scanning your remaining photos, lock your iPhone and connect it to power."

The Memories rare relying heavily on the photos with persons. My iPhone is showing some memories, but because the faces scan has only processed 1000 photos of the 40000 it needs to scan, there are not yet many persons in the Peoples album to create memories from.

Nope, it hasn't finished... actually there are more than 47000 photos to go. It will take weeks :-/

Are you sure the two things are that connected, anyway? Because every screenshot of Memories I see online has the date on top that says "Today...", while mine is stuck on three days ago, plus I don't see the trouble of showing me some random pics of "this day a few years ago" every day, even if the face scan hasn't finished.

I am seeing the memories for two days ago.  And all memories are having photos of detected persons as the title. Apple does not say so, but the memories seem to be centered around persons.  Did you do something exciting with plenty of photos exactly one year ago? Are there plenty of photos?

This user Guide page confirms that people are important for memories:

Photos scans your photo library for people’s faces and adds the most frequently found faces to the People album. You can assign names to the people Photos finds, add people who appear less frequently, mark people as favorites, and view memories that contain specific people. The more photos you have, the longer the first scan takes.

The automatically created memories need something to trigger them:

    Memories can focus on:

    • Locations, such as a favorite vacation spot or your neighborhood
    • Special events, such as birthdays and holidays
    • Scenes, such as the beach or forest
    • Pictures of family and friends

Thank you! This probably solves the question, then... I'll wait for the face scan to be complete, and then see what happens. Write back if you notice something else.
