Q: Cannot load 60% of webpages

I am running El Capitan 10.11.3 on an iMac 21.5" (late 2009)

the following is true on browsers Chrome (52.0.27), Firefox (45.0.2), and Safari (9.0.3):

  • browser will not open 60% of attempted websites, examples include NYtimes, google scholar, chase, jadefitnessdc, myfitnesspal, latimes
  • sites that do load include:
    • probublica, discussions.apple, google search, myhealth.va, soundcloud

As you can see there doesn't appear to be rhyme or reason to which sites load and which do not.

I've have not made any upgrades to my OS, installed any updates, nor any new software.  Suddenly the problem began two weeks ago (around 9/20/16):

Firefox's error reads:

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at chase.com.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.

If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.

If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Chrome's reads:

This site can’t be reached

  1. chase.com refused to connect.

Safari reads:

Safari can't connect to the server. Safari can't open the page Netflix because Safari can't connect to the Netflix's server

Any ideas?

Pages is a Word Processor/DTP App  and has nothing to do with webpages.

Have you got some kind of blocker set?

Try creating another Account in your System Preferences and browsing from there and see if that makes a difference.

Would you like this post moved to either the Safari community, or OS X El Capitan community?

Safari - Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

Safari doesn't load a page or webpage items are missing

Safari/other browsers – Website not loading

Try going to Safari/Preferences/Extensions and disable all extensions. Quit Safari, reopen, and see if the website will now load. If so, enable extensions one or two at a time until you find which extension is causing the problem.

I have a similar but not identical problem. Firefox works fine. Safari will not open any websites while using Verizon hot spot in a low level (-104db) area. Now home again and Safari will not open sites asked for by link from emails. Direct request via bookmarks works OK. When on the hot spot the first 1-3 requests went normal; then no more openings. This started about a week ago. I have recently updated my OS in both Macs. The message I get is "Safari can't open the page... wait a few minutes and try again." Waiting and retrying never open the page.

    Hi Big --

Have you checked your DNS setting in Sys Prefs > Network > WiFi >  DNS ?

What does the DNS setting say?

This is Geoff. I disabled all 3 extensions but no benefit. No add blocker but Ghostery is one of the extensions. It happened once on Firefox since I last posted. It happens all the time if I try to get into the Washington Post from a link in their newsletter. It has not happened with getting into a site from the bookmarks. I'm using BookMacster for bookmark organizing. On the MBA it happens with any and all attempts to get into a web site. It seems to gradually increase in severity as I use the browser. I was away for 4 days and thus using MBA exclusively. It started out only failing on a few attempts but by the end of the 4 days was failing on all attempts to get on a web page. I updated both the iMac and the MBA just before leaving 5 days ago. Ergo; I have just now started using the iMac after the update. If it follows the pattern on the MBA I will not be able to use Safari on it in another 2-3 days.

    Try the following:

    A) If you have ANY antivirus or security products installed on your Mac then uninstall them correctly and completely

    B) Create a new network "Location"

    1. "Apple" menu > "System Preferences" > "Network"
    2. Click the "lock" in lower left and authenticate
    3. In the "Location" drop-down, choose "Edit Locations"
    4. Click the "+" to create a new location, then name it "New Location"
    5. Click "Done"
    6. Click "Apply"

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

I'm confused about a new network location. Does that change anything in my usual online works? Is it safe? What is a location in this respect?

Interesting request for using etrecheck. I just trashed a version that was 2 years old. I had been asked to use it for another problem. I'll download it again and post the results.

I noticed a new twist this morning. Add BBC news to the source of links that will not open. However, if I copy the link address from the tab that is trying to get to the link and paste it in a new tab it works. Stopping and reloading wishing the initial tab does not work.

I won't get to the etrecheck process until later today.

Fishingaddict and Eric, thanks for the help.

I've jumped into another thread, not sure which of us or both your replies are directed. Should I be starting a new thread?

Yes, please start your own discussion. Trying to answer several problems in one discussion gets confusing for everyone. A new post would be much more visible.

You can always change the location back to what it is now.

OK. Will do. Interestingly, the problem seems to be slowly improving. Sort of weird.

I'll summarize it and post a new discussion.

    Thanks for the help.
