You say that your MacBook is an early 2009 model, but your specs line indicates that it is a Late 2008 model running Mac OS X 10.5.8.

Could you clarify, please? If it really is the early 2009 model, which version of Mac OS is it currently running?

From your open Macbook window.

Go to the Apple icon then down to 'About this  Mac'.

The software update button is there. (Bottom right of Mac details.)

You will need to purchase a retail Snow Leopard disk:

You need this system in order to get the app store. Once you've installed that, update it to 10.6.8 and you can then update to El Capitan.

You will also want to seriously consider installing more RAM - you will absolutely not be happy running the latest OS on 2 GB - 4 would be the minimum, 8 is better.

You cannot update 10.5.8 - that is the latest version for Leopard.

If a purchase is required for an update the 'software update' button will give a link to follow.

There is no software update button in "about this Mac" in 10.5.x - the current software update process was introduced with the app store in 10.6.6.

Additionally, there is no way to update from 10.5.8 EXCEPT to purchase a retail Snow leopard disk at the Apple store - you cannot download Snow leopard. It was the last OS version which came with install media and is needed to get access to the app store.

If you want to update, yes, you need to buy the retail Snow Leopard disk at the Apple store (I linked to it earlier). That is version 10.6.3 - when finished with the install, hit the update button and you should get an update to 10.6.8. With that, you will have access to the app store (in the Applications folder) and you can then upgrade to El Capitan.

Please note:

1. You should definitely add more RAM - at least a total of 4, a total of 8 would be much better. The new OS versions require much more RAM.

2. Take a look at all your applications - there will be many from 10.5.x that  will no longer work with later OS versions. Check them all (at their own websites) to see if they have updates or not.
