Q: iPad no longer charges from Computer after update to iOS 10

Since I've updated to IOS 10 on my iPad Air 2, it will not charge using my computer (An iMac) or when connected to my car.  It worked before I updated.  Any idea how to get this to work again?

Hi. Is it the higher wattage iPad charger or the phone charger? I'm using a long 3rd party cord with my iPad Air and it charges normally, but a wimpy cable could be a problem. From these reports, it sounds like the software is being more rigorous about checking the current and voltage at the device. I'd guess more likely due to programmer error than any malice aforethought.

Clearly, it is time to Contact Apple Support - your experience described is sufficient to prove beyond reasonable doubt what the cause and effect culprit is - it could not be clearer evidence.

We await Apple's response to your call with baited breath.

I don't want to seem glib - or redundant - but Contact Apple Support

    Elementary, huh? Walks like duck...

I am gonna disagree... 'on purpose' for 'some reason' - most likely to drive consumers to Apple branded (or endorsed?) charging/connecting products.

It is a fair action on their part - sorta.

It would not be 'out of character' for Apple to ensure "proprietary" methods - in fact, it would be out of character Apple NOT to!

I contacted Apple Support, and the guy said he's never heard of this problem. After placing me on hold he came back and said his coworkers were saying they're starting to get similar calls and it appears to be a glitch in iOS10 with iPads only. He recommended rolling back to iOS9 through iTunes, and there will be a fix in the next patch release, expected within the next week or two. I'm at 51% so I'm shutting this thing off until I can restore and get a full charge. Thanks for your comments and suggestions everyone.

Followup to my earlier report. After a few hours, the iPad ceased to charge again, or at least it didn't show it charging. As it turns out it is charging, very s...l...o...w...l...y. About 2%/hour. So this morning it's up to 100%. But it still a damned annoyance.

Well, mine quit working after working all day yesterday (The key is have 100% battery before plugging it into the computer or car and it will hold 100%)   Anyway,

Just got off the phone with Apple Support, and a "supervisor" said " IOS10 takes more power so it won't work on low power chargers anymore"  and I ask him "Well, does that mean the battery won't last as long now?"  He backpedaled a lot and then said he will forward this to the engineers.   HA!     I work in tech support and I can tell when someone is BSing to get the caller off the phone.

It's a bug.  Hopefully they will fix it.. My iPad is going back to ios9 for now.

Hi CCC, I don't disagree with you. However, I've seen many instances where a simple software update of a component turns into a complete rewrite by someone who doesn't understand the original design or implementation. They don't study, or don't understand, the existing code, so they work to an offhand spec provided by a supervisor who doesn't understand the subtleties either. The result is that things that used to work are changed in arbitrary ways. So it's possible that something was rewitten to handle current and coming devices, and mistakenly lopped off those that used to charge from 0.5 Amp computer ports. The odd thing is that it wasn't detected and reported by the beta testers.

I spoke with Apple support last night and they knew nothing of the sort.  They wanted me to bring it in for repair and made an appointment.  I then tried my own diagnosis and discovered that my laptop with an Apple lightning  cable and my 10w adapter with a generic cable gave me "not charging" error.  When I used Apples cable and the 10w adapter, it charged as normal and continues to do so.  We will find out soon that it's not a glitch but a money maker for Apple.

Same issue with my iPhone 6.

Phone will charge for a few minutes and then this accessory not supported comes up and phone stops charging. It's really an issue in my car as my phone is my GPS and music source The Apple certified Amazon cable is only used for charging and worked fine before ios10. Same thing with two other Apple certified Amazon cables that I own. Apple cables work just fine.

    "It's a bug."

You gottit! They admitted to danreilly that very thing!  Link to Post

I ran a customer/tech support shop myself... I DIScouraged my folks from BSing the customers - assuring them that their failure to solve because of "ignorance of the facts" would NOT be considered on their "performance review"... I am pretty sure that that assurance has never been given to Apple specialists

    Best luck you guys!

We could call this "The Law of Unintended Consequences" [to be kind]

At bottom, however it happens - unintentionally - this "faux pas" is (or should be) handled by a Best Practices regimen when producing the project = "Discovery" is ALWAYS step one (do your homework!)

I still say that is possible that we have not the whole story - the specialist that "had not heard of the misbehavior" was told to tell @danreilly "something" in any case
