Q: OD apparently random "Operation is not supported by the directory node" error

Hi all,

Over the years we've gotten the OD error "operation is not supported by the directory node" with servers ranging from 10.8-10.11, however it appears to be happening more and more recently when trying to add new users, or add users to a groups. It occurs both via the Server.app and command line.

We're using an SSL cert provided by GoDaddy, and it's still got  few years left before it expires. The current server is running 10.11.6 and the latest version of Server.app.

The workaround described by user oak55 at https://discussions.apple.com/message/23579482#message23579482 back in 2013 does temporarily solve the issue, as does rebooting the machine, however I'm hoping there's a more permanent solution out there.

Thanks!

In my experience, it is very difficult to fix problems with OD. On the couple of occasions I've tried in the past I've ended up nuking it and recreating from scratch. Even if you can make a specific symptom go away by using a 'solution' such as the one your refer to, if you don't understand and fix the root cause the problem will be back.

It happened again today, and I noticed this error in the log file as I tried to add a new group (assume example.com is the domain name). Again, reseting the certificate cleared the issue up immediately.

Sep 19 10:51:19 example slapd[352]: bdb(dc=example,dc=com): unable to allocate space from the buffer cache

Unfortunately due to the number of users and devices I currently have in Profile Manager, blowing away the OD and restoring isn't really an option.

    Thanks
