Q: "Events" keeps reappearing on iPhone / iPad

Hi everyone,

I have a problem when syncing my Photos library with iPhone and iPad. It used to work fine for quite some time but for a while now it suddenly showed me the old "Events" folder that was created from iPhoto on both iPad and iPhone even though I am on the latest iOS and OS X versions, incl. the Photos app. "Events" haven't been a thing for over two years and I have no idea what happened and why it keeps showing me the folder. In addition to this it shows me "Faces" in the People folder that I deleted ages ago.

I tried to rebuild the Photos library as well as completely deleting everything from iPhone and iPad and Re-syncing multiple times. Nothing could resolve the issue. Then I tried to use iCloud Photo Library instead of syncing manually with my Mac. This destroyed my whole library and I had to use a backup.

Please help!

All software and OS on the latest version.

iPhoto events is a folder containing albums corresponding the the iPhoto events you migrated over - if you want you can delete any or all of them - they are just standard albums in a standard folder no different from one you create

    Hi Larry,

you are correct, this is how the migration works. After this happened I deleted the "Events" folder and created Albums instead. Everything worked fine for a year and I could sync my Albums perfectly fine. In the OS X Photos App everything is still fine, no Events folder in sight. On iOS however the Events folder keep reappearing (and the Faces I deleted ages ago). I can not delete it on iOS, because it says it is a folder from my Mac.

So again, the problem is I have an Events folder in iOS that I don't have in Photos on the Mac. Haven't for a year. I can't delete it. Same for some Faces I deleted a long time ago. Whenever I delete all pictures from iPhone and sync the whole library completey new, it is fine for a while and everything is ok. Then, from one day to the other, the folder is back...

What changed just before this occurred? What are your iCLoud Settings on the Mac and your IOS devices?

    Hey Larry,

thank you for your response! Unfortunately I can't tell you what changes right before it occurs. It keeps happening seemingly random. Of course I know there is something that triggers it, but don't know what it is. Then I delete all synced pictures from the phone/ipad via iTunes and re-sync. Everything is ok for a couple of days or sometimes only hours and then the Events and old Faces re-appear.

As I suspected it must have to do with that data still being stored in some database I tried to locate the Photos database file within the library a little while back and found the faces database as well as were able to delete some of those older ones in the database using SQL software. Nevertheless, this also did not solve the issue.

From an iCloud perspective everything but iCloud Photo Sharing is turned off. As I mentioned above, turning iCloud Photo Library on destroyed my whole library and I had to use a backup to revert this.

Thank you so much for your help!

Are you syncing your Photos Library from the Mac to the iOS devices using iTunes Photo Sync?  That is is the only situation, that I know, where you cannot delete files and albums or folders on the iPhone. iTunes synced library items can only be deleted by syncing again.

If you sync with iTunes you may want to check, if the correct Photos Library has been enabled as the System Photo Library - check this in the Photos > Preferences > General.  The option "Use as System Photo Library" needs to be grayed out.

If you are already syncing with the correct library - have you tried, if removing the iPod Photo Cache will help?  Sometimes this cache has a corruption and then the albums you selected in iTunes will not sync or older albums and folders may sync.  See this support document:  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203156

Yes, I am syncing from the Mac via iTunes. And by syncing again is how I deleted the library again when it all of a sudden started showing Events and old Faces again.

"Use as System Photo Library" is grayed out.

Deleted the iPod Photo Chache and re-synced. For now Events and Faces are gone again. But as I said, this is usually the case when I delete and sync again. I will have to wait a couple of days if it re-appears and also watch again if I can make anything out that triggers it.

Thank you for now! Will get back to this in a few days!

Aaaand the folders are back. I did not sync to the Mac in the meantime what leads me to believe it must be something on the phone that triggers it. Last thing I did was to make an iOS update, but if that actually triggers it I find that quite weird... any ideas?

No idea, sorry. If the iPhone is syncing with iTunes, then iCloud Photo Library is disabled. The mysterious folders and albums must come from some iTunes Photo Cache in a Photos Library.  Could Photos occasionally see a different library on a connected backup drive?

    Hi leonie,

no, never had a second library or anything like that. As outlined above, I am pretty much running out of idea. Reset and deleted everything incl. every single cache multiple times. Reset phone as well as rebuild photos library on the mac. Nothing seems to help. At this point - just tried to remove entire library again from the phone - I can't even get photos off the phone any longer.

This is becoming a major frustration point, more and more every day.
