Q: usb printer via wired airport

Hye everybody,

Can I share my usb-printer on my airport express, via my cablemodem? What I want to say: my iMac 27" is wired, my MacBook can be wired or wireless.

Can I connect my airport with an ethernetcable to my modem, just to receive the printjobs from both computers from that point?

Thanks for al your responses!

Greetz,

It would help to know if your "cablemodem" is just a modem or a combination modem and router or gateway device. To address that would you please provide its make & model please?

    Dear Tesserax,

Thx for your response. My "cable modem" is a combination modem and router (my ISP is Telenet) This device provides all the traffic needed for wired and wireless internet, even tv, radio and telephone.

As attachment I send you two images of the install sheet. Hope this information will give you the needed information.

Thanks for the additional information. Yes, you should be able to share your USB printer, attached to the AirPort Express base station. The Express just needs to be configured as wireless client.

In this setup the airport should be able to act as a print server to the network.

However USB printing over network is never a certainty.. trial and error is the next step.

Plug the Express into the main router by ethernet. It will be setup in bridge mode. ie on the network tab it should show Off (bridge mode)..

I do strongly recommend you set express to a static IP. You can do it on the internet tab of the Express.. just copy whatever IP it gets in dhcp mode.. or you can use dhcp reservations in main router.. but keeping the IP the same helps no end for the printer to be available to the network at all times.
