Q: Iphone 7 reception

Just "upgraded" from a 5S to a 7 and the reception is terrible.  Had friends who got 6's and had the same problem so held off for the 7.  My 5S works fine at my house, never an issue, my new 7 no one can hear me.  Very disappointed! Seems like all the features are more important than working as a phone.  Still have a 5S work phone that works perfectly at my house.  Any suggestions?

Just to be sure, you are holding the phone so that the microphone is by your mouth, correct? When facing the screen, the volume buttons will be on the left and the microphone at the bottom of the phone.

Mine sounds great. Maybe yours is defective?

Consider whether you are using cases that may be interfering with the antennas.

My iPhone 7 gives better cellular reception than any of the many iPhones I've had before.

I'm having the same issue. Dropping calls in my home when my 6s normally was fine. My 7 has been bouncing back and forth between LTE/3G/1X (Verizon) more than usual. Yesterday my work phone (iPhone 6) and my iPhone 7, both on Verizon, were getting LTE on the 6 and 1X on the 7 at the same time side-by-side. Not using a case on either of them.

Exact same issue with going back and forth between LTE/3G/1x and occasionally getting No Service.  I wonder if there are certain areas of the country having problems, since I do not see widespread reporting of this.  Very frustrating.  Hope this is just a software or firmware problem.

Same here with AT&T. In my office on my 6s I had 3 bars of LTE and had no problem with people hearing me on phone calls. After upgrading to iPhone 7 I get 1 bar of LTE at most, I see a lot of 4G and phone calls frequently drop out. I've read a lot of people are having this issue since upgrading, especially on Verizon but there's a bunch of us on AT&T with the issue as well.

Is there a carrier patch, OS update that can fix?

I'm with AT&T and have an iPhone 7 that is working just fine.  I have travelled with it and the reception has been at least as good as it was with my previous iPhones.

I suggest you download the AT&T Mark the Spot application from the App Store:

    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/at-t-mark-the-spot/id338307313?mt=8

This (free) app is used to notify AT&T of areas where your cellular reception (calls, data or both) is less than ideal.  They seem to pay attention and improve or add towers based on this feedback.  And even if your reception is awful when you invoke the app, it will remember where you were at the time and send the information to AT&T later when your reception is better.

This is my exact experience. Bouncing all around the Verizon spectrum and several dropped/missed calls. I also have no phone case

I went into the Verizon store in Scottsdale, AZ and was able to show them the issue.  They felt it was the SIM card, so they swapped it out for a new one.  It did not resolve the issue.  So, I did a Reset Network Setting in General settings on the phone.  Still no luck fixing this issue.  I called Verizon support on Thursday to report the problems.  I was told I would get a text with a ticket number, but never received anything.  I went to the Apple Store at the Scottsdale Quarter yesterday (Friday) and showed them some screenshots of it happening outside the store.  As a result, they ended up giving me a new iPhone.  However, the problem still persists.  At this point, I can tell you it happens throughout Scottsdale, AZ (85260, 85255, 85251 are the local places I have been over the past week).  Furthermore, I was in San Jose and Palo Alto Monday to Wednesday this week.  I did not notice/see it happening once during that trip.  Not sure if this is a problem with the modem, carrier settings, iPhone software/firmware.  My wife's iPhone 6 does not exhibit any of these issues.

thanks chrisG1! that was helpful! i called apple care and the guy recommended that i do an iTunes restore and start it as a new phone.. to not use an icloud backup... which i did when i got the phone the day it was released.  BUT since health data can only be moved to a new phone via icloud backup ( i exported the data via health app on my old 6s.. and emailed it to myself.. just to find out its encrypted and the two 3rd party apps i tried to import the data failed) and given it was just for a couple of days and i didn't test it much in the wild.. i went back to an icloud back up to keep my years worth of apple watch data.)

so i can't say starting it as a fresh phone solved the issue.. the latest iOS update that dropped friday.. 10.0.2.. i hoped would work but seems it didn't address that..

my guess its the radios and when they switch frequencies  .. hopefully its a software fix and not a hardware prob.. i find it hard to believe that a brand new sim card would be the culprit ..

Those with AT&T (and other networks) seem to be reporting issues at a much lower rate compared to Verizon (way lower than their subscriber ratios).  I'm wondering if this impacts all phones and is just more noticeable on Verizon due to their network.  Maybe there is a bad batch of phones that mostly got shipped to Verizon.

All the phone representatives have been very helpful from both companies, but at this point there doesn't seem to be any acknowledgement of a systematic issue (and maybe there isn't), but it seems unlikely for a quick fix.

I'm with ATT and my iphone6 worked great.  Upgraded to the 7 yesterday and now only 1 bar.  I can't hear anyone and phone is useless.  I've tried restarting phone, airplane off and on, reset network settings and nothing worked.  This is a serious problem since I work from home and can't talk to anyone.  Never had a problem with the 6 in the same exact apartment.  HELP APPLE!!!
