Q: Network users cannot login with Profile Manager

I have 40 iMacs running Yosemite and I just migrated to OS X El Cap Server. Nothing worked properly so I wiped the entire server and started fresh. Everything seems to have worked except when it came time to test a student login. The password jiggles every time. I can login as the local admin and connect to the server through the finder using the student login, which tells me file sharing is working. I am a graphics teacher, not an IT expert. OS X Server is advertised as being a simple server good for home use to corporate use. Not sure that is really the truth at this point. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated as I have students who need to login next week.

I have just encountered this too.

El Cap clients log in ok, but older Mavericks builds fail.

...so not a real solution, but upgrading clients to El-Cap may be a fix.

The other option that can bail you out as a teacher is to have a local, generic account on each machine ('studentUser' / password: 'f-ingServerIsBroke' or whatever). Set it up - with parental controls to limit if needed - and the file shares you want as login items - that way at least students can use machines and guest users (like those surprise groups who aren't on your OD yet ) can get access quickly.

As an aside I also did not start out as an IT person - nearly ten years ago (when I knew a lot less) I used Apple's old server software to set up a lovely network with granular control of machines that worked beautifully and I could train others very quickly to administer... Things seem to have gone backwards since then - hopefully it will get better as the new 'profile-based' paradigm matures.
