Q: iMac 2015 randomly hangs and reboots

I have a 2015 27" iMac 4Ghz with 32GB of OWC RAM and the necessary peripherals connected through USB and Thunderbolt running El Capitan (updated) and experience random crashes every few days.

Most of the times I'm simply browsing through Safari. All of a sudden the machine hangs, including the mouse pointer and after about 10 seconds the machine reboots and everything is back to normal, like you would start the machine manually. So, no messages saying there was an unexpected shutdown, no crash recover/reporter, nothing.

Checking the logs there are no kernel panics. The only thing that I can find in the system.log is a recurring shutdown cause: -128

Does anybody experience the same issue or know what this error code is about?

(The peripherals: Sonnett Express SE II with Blackmagic Decklink mini monitor and ATTO H680 HBA, which connects to a HP Ultrium 3000 SAS tape drive, a QNAP TVS-871T NAS, a Wacom Intuos 5 and some card readers.)

I don't see anything obvious in your report, however sometimes using a USB hub or a peripheral can fail causing the problem you are experiencing. The only way to tell what the offending device is to disconnect all of the peripherals that are physically connected to the Mac and then attach each one-by-one test for a few days until the problem occurs again. Once it has then you have found the culprit.

By the way, you also need a larger capacity Time Machine External Hard Disk, I recommend using an OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro series of enclosure.

    Thanks for your assistence.

Yes, I suppose elimination would do the trick. It's just that I need all of those devices daily. But hey, let's try it out.

Actually, I use my 30TB NAS as a Time Machine disk, but have limited it's capacity. Personally I don't need a gazillion copies of my local files and am fine with TM only keeping 4 backups before deleting the oldest ones.

One thing  you should know is NAS devices are not supported by OS X and really should not be used for Time Machine. Because NAS devices are not supported by OS X what can frequently happen is that a user (you) upgrade OS X to a version that is no longer supported by the NAS developer. The lesson here is that prior to updating OS X check with your NAS developer to see if they support that version and what version of their software must be installed first. In your case it is possible you are using an outdated version of the NAS software that isn't designed to support the version of OS X (10.11.6) you have installed.

The only halfway consistent thing about the "unknown cause" -128 shutdown code is possibly RAM good enough ro pass the AHT test, but not up to muster for OSX.

Ah ha, I was wondering whether RAM could have anything to do with it.

    I've purchased a 4x8GB kit through Macsales.com, according to OWC's own specifications.

Are these known to be problematic?

Those should be great, I've seen a few instances where replacing the RAM fixed it… please keep us posted as to the outcome.

I have this exact problem. Mouse freezes and about 20 seconds later it reboots automatically. Has happened randomly for several months. Found another thread on this forum where many late iMac 27 5k machines are doing this. Most have changed RAM, reloaded software and it does not fix it. The only thing that seems to work is to have the logic board replaced.

Oh no, I was hoping we wouldn't have to go through this. I don't think I've ever owned a mac product that didn't need replacement....

Anyway, can you point to the threads you're referring to? Curious to read more about it.

Also, did you get in touch with Apple for a logic board replacement?

    Thanks!
