The following is from the Apple TV 4 user guide ...

    Screensavers

Apple TV displays a screensaver after it’s idle for a preset number of minutes.

The Aerial screensaver shows beautiful slow-motion videos of places around the world, download from an online server, making the screensaver more engaging and dynamic. For Aerial, you can control how often Apple TV checks for and downloads new videos.

Change the Aerial screensaver download frequency. In Settings , go to General > Screensaver and select Download New Videos, then select an option.

Return to using Apple TV. When the screensaver is active, press the Touch surface to return to whatever app you were previously using.

Choose a different screensaver. In Settings , go to General > Screensaver and select Type. Then select the screensaver you want to use.

Select which photos to display. Many of the screensaver options display a slideshow of photos—these can be photos provided by Apple, or a collection of your own stored in iCloud. To choose which photos are used, in Settings , go to General > Screensaver and select Type. Then choose one of the photo-based screensaver types.

If you choose My Photos, the Photos app opens. Follow the instructions in Set photos as a screensaver.

Set the screensaver delay time. In Settings , go to General > Screensaver and select the Start After setting, then specify a number of minutes. This instructs Apple TV to automatically start the screensaver if the device has been idle for the specified duration.

Activate the screensaver immediately. Press the Home button to go to the Home screen (if you’re not already there), then press the  button twice.

That depends on where the albums are.

Go; General > Screensaver > Type and chaos 'my photos' for albums iniCloud photo library via the internet or 'home sharing' for albums on your computer.

Thanks Winston for your reply however when you select the album you want to use as your screensaver there isn't an option to set it as your screensaver. I went into our local Apple Store and asked their AppleTV "specialist" about this and no there isn't any capability to set your own photos as a screensaver, he assumes there will be an update to correct this, I'm refering to and using iOS10.0 on the AppleTV.

Yes you can, however if you are using iCloud you can only set shared albums as a screensaver. The other option is to go through home sharing to use your local photos.

Thanks Carolyn for your assistance but there isn't an option to set your own photos as a screen saver and as in my reply to Winston it appears that will require another update from Apple for this to be rectified.

Yes there is, but only within shared albums in iCloud. You can also set them via home sharing

I can set this album via Home sharing.

I can also set it via iCloud.

Note the 'People' option that demonstrates it's a cloud option and not the same option as home sharing above.
