Right click a missing file in the Browser and select Reveal in Finder.

See where the file path leads.

I have done that. It leads to the "Original files folder" but the icon is blank and it says that the alias cannot be found.

    Please see image 0015.

Are these from a camera card?

It seems they Are still referencing the card. Reinsert the card and do File->Import->Reimport from Camera/Archive.

Make sure they finish importing before quitting or enecting the card. You can press Command-9 to see if FCP X is still busy importing

It was originally from a camera card, but the files are all in external hard drives... Could it be that the hard drives are too full. I will try getting another external hard drive... My main hard drive for this project has 4TB. How much of should be free?

    At least 10% free space.

The small arrows (symlinks) on the file icons mean the files are located somewhere else.

You will have to reconnect that other location.

yes, they are in several locations but I never had a problem before.... it always finds them.

I have noticed that unless 40% of the hard drive is free, it doesn't work...

I tried last night several times to re start etc but it did not work....

Right now after 3 more attempts it has opened the files.... I am making a Master file, but the project is far from finished...

Any ideas on how to avoid this issue please??

    Could be several things.

    A drive may be failing.

Maybe it has written and erased too many times and suffering fragmenting.

I'd use Consolidate and create a fresh Library on a zero erased drive if used, or a new Mac OS Extended one before loosing work.

    Also have a backup.

Thanks Al, but I do not have a new drive. The drives I am using are new, they have never been erased...I have a limited budget and I have already bought 4.

What do I consolidate project files? What does it do exactly?

    Sorry, I am learning...

Consolidate finds all your files and places/copies them into your Library.

All the files will have to be online for this to work:

It seems in your case with this Library stuff is in differing places.

Once you have a working Library, backup the whole thing to another suitable drive just in case of issues with one drive.

BTW: Even a new drive can be flakey.

No need to copy Optimised or Proxy leave them unchecked:

Use a drive that is fast enough to handle the media. e.g. USB 3 or Thunderbolt.

Consolidating is a way to get all the media in one place. The problem with this plan is that FCP X cannot copy or move media that it can't find. Try relinking the media first and then consider if and where yoj may want to consolidate. Keep in mind teo things: you need enough free space on the drive to which you consolidate; and you don't to have to consolidate inti the library, you can choose a folder. This will allow you to keep the library where it is and copy all the media to a large drive with a lot of free space. But, again, first you need to relink
