Q: What is the size of the Philips screwdriver I must use to open the memory slots on my late 2009 iMac ?

What is the size of the Philips screwdriver I must use to open the memory slots on my late 2009 iMac ?

I have already bought three different sizes at random and none work ... I live in Germany so I need the size in German units (if different from the US).

Many thanks thanks for your help !

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), late 2009

    Dear Dialabrain,

You have kindly helped me before. Can I ask you for more help ?

    I have managed to open the memory slot and insert the extra memory (from to 4Gb to 8GB, in 4x2Gb, of which 2x2 original + 2xCrucial 4GB Kit (2GBx2) DDR3 1066 MT/s (PC3-8500) SODIMM 204-Pin for Mac - CT2C2G3S1067MCEU).

Since then, in the past 24 hours, I have had 7 crashes of applications (Safari, Vuze, VCL) and 3 panic shut-downs. I have tried to reinstall the memory (always in pair) in different positions, but it works for a while then crashes (about after one hour of use).

I do not understand !!! Can you help me ? I have the last panic shut-down report in PDF but I dot know how to append it to this message.

Many, many thanks in advance for your help and kindest regards !

PS : I have forgotten to say that my iMac is of the "late 2009" type, and that I use Mac OS Snow Leopard (10.6.8). Until now, I never had problems of crashes or panic shut-downs ...

FWIW, it seems like you bought the correct memory. Of course there are many reasons you could be having problems.

Download and run EtreCheck and post the results.

The first thing you need to do is remove the adware/malware that is installed. Re-run EtreCheck and click on the red Adware!  [Remove] links. Then restart and run EtreCheck again and post.

I have removed the adware and the three plists (as per the deleted items indicated at the bottom of the report). The iMac has been running without kernel panic or app crashing for 7 hours now, but I do not understand why since I have only just now deleted the items. Were "com.apple.servernotifyd" and "com.appbox.AppBox" important ? Should I reinstate them ? (Etrecheck was questioning their authenticity).

I don't know what the two files are so I would wait and see if anyone else comments. I would also let your Mac run since it's working for now. Post back if your problem returns.

Many thanks for all your help. This is very kind of you !

I could not find any reference to the two files on the Internet. So I shall keep them in a storage place (not in the system) and if there seems to be new problems, I shall put them back just in case ... I am crossing my fingers that the machine keeps running without further problem, as I like the new speediness with the extra memory. But I wish I knew why it has had four kernel panics and seven application crashes in the last 24 hours, since I added the extra 4 Gb....

Anyway, many thanks again and bye for now !!!

You're welcome. If you do have any more problems I wouldn't assume it's because of those two files and put them back. I would wait until someone gives a definitive answer on what they are.
