Q: Iphone 7 won't connect to iTunes on computer

I just bought the iPhone 7 and I've been trying to to connect it to iTunes to restore my backup, however the error message "the iPhone cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes" keeps popping up, even though I already updated my iTunes to the latest version available. Is there anything I can do to fix this??

iPhone 7, iOS 10

By "the latest version available" do you mean iTunes 12.5.1.21? If not, are you running Windows XP or Vista?

If you are running Vista then you cannot be running the latest iTunes version which is required to sync and restore an iPhone 7.

Windows Vista cannot run iTunes 12.5.1.

If your computer supports it, its suggested to update to a newer version of Windows. At least Windows 7 to be able to install iTunes 12.5.1 which is required for an iPhone 7.

I Have this problem, I'm running iTunes version 12.3... and when I open it it says a new version 12.5... is available to download. It takes me to the download page and downloads a file. It all installs apparently fine but when I open iTunes again I'm still on 12.3.

The general troubleshooting advice when iTunes fails to install properly (and reinstalling or repairing it does not work) is to remove not only iTunes but all related components, reboot, remove the target installation folders and reinstall.

See turingtest2's excellent iTunes for Windows Troubleshooting Guide at:

Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates

for the necessary steps.  Especially see the Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components and iTunes installers sections.

As already explained, Update Vista to at least Windows 7, and download the most recent version of iTunes then.

Vista cannot run iTunes 12.5.1 and as such cannot sync with an iPhone running iOS 10

I faced same issue. iPhone 6S Plus with iOS 10 was connecting but iPhone 7 Plus wasn't connecting.

Unfortunately as of now there is no solution to this problem.

After trying various options for almost entire day, nothing worked.

    Finally I did below

    1. I restored by backup from Windows 7 machine on iPhone 6S Plus. (Used my friend's 6s plus).

    2. Took backup from that on another laptop that has Windows 10.

    3. Re-stored on iPhone 7 Plus from it.

I have the same issue with iMac computer and Windows computer.  Same error message from both computers. Says it requires a newer version of iTunes on my iPhone 7, but all settings are up-to-date on all 3 devices.  This is nuts!  This phone is supposed to be improved.  Don't have any answers yet.

What builds of iTunes are installed on the iMac and the Windows computer respectively?

What precise versions of iTunes do you have on the computers.

The exact version number.   Telling us they are up to date is of no help.

As was said already in this thread, you need to have iTunes 12.5.1. to be able to sync with an iPhone 7.  If you have any other version, then it will not work.

Also what versions of Windows, and OSx are you currently running  on the computers?

Windows XP Professional with iTunes 12.1.3.6

    OS X Version 10.8.5 with iTunes 12.4.3.1

.....so I will update to iTunes 12.5.1 and get back to let you know if it works.

    Thanks

OS X Version 10.8.5 will not support iTunes 12.5.1, only Version 10.9.5 or higher, so I updated my Mac to OS Sierra.

Out of luck with Windows XP, as stated earlier you need Windows 7 or later to support iTunes 12.5.1 for the iPhone 7
